Boykett Room, Scotch College
A record 102 attendees donned the finer threads to be part of the OSSC night of nights, once again held in the fabulous Boykett Room, nestled next to the Yarra River. With three teams, special guest Jack Reilly, additional speeches, bigger than ever Auction and Raffle, as well as the usual season countdown to get through, time was of the essence in a once again action packed evening.
Following the usual thank you committee speech it was once again left to the coaches to have their say. Surprisingly Eamonn kept his speech relatively short (15mins), and before we knew it we had Golden Boot winners for the season (Anthony Truong - Seniors, Peter Pallis - Reserves, Dave Collett - Thirds), and Jaryd Lawless as the Doug Hurrell winner for his recorded version of the SCOTCH war cry. Jaryd, give me an S, give me a...? Shayne Francis was voted most valuable Clubman for the year.
Following the delicious main course, our special guest Jack Reilly took to the lecturn to give us all some insight into football in Australia, and opened up the floor for questions, which was very well received by players and fans alike. It was an eye-opening speech.
After possibly one of the longest and most lop-sided Raffle draws, finally we were up to the season's Best & Fairest Countdown, however well behind schedule, much to the President's disgust. The first half of the season saw Stuart Robinson, Mike Oldroyd and Sam Kiele take early leads in the voting and asked the rest of their team mates whether they were good enough in the second half of the year to catch them.
The countdown break saw an impressive Auction with many generously donated items such as a signed Mark Schwarzer Goalkeeper shirt and ball, with the added signatures of Jack Reilly on the night surely enhancing their values, as well as the Melbourne Victory personally signed team photo from the 2006 championship winning squad, racing memorabilia, impressive $300 dinner voucher, astounding $1000 Flight Centre gift voucher, and many many other quality items. Needless to say this Auction was the single most successful fundraising event in the club's history.
The second half of the Best & Fairest Countdown saw Anthony Truong and Doug Baillie continue to collect votes for the Seniors, with Roo and others picking up votes for the Reserves. The Thirds was closely contested with many getting votes, but no one clearly dominated here. The final winners were as per half time as Senior Captain Stuart Robinson as well as debutants Mike Oldroyd & Sam Kiele taking out the Senior, Reserve and Thirds top honours for season 2007.
A Special thanks to the Jack Rielly for providing a night highlight for club, as well as that little but of pollish in what was a great evening. Thanks also to the committee who put in long hours to get everything right on the night - and it was right!
