PENALTY HERO SUBMITS REPORT ON TIME!
As the Melbourne autumn threw ochre leaves across the hallowed pitch and the dew glistened on the remaining blades of grass, the men of the Mighty Reds prepared for a pitched battle against league leaders Fitzroy City. Yes, the time had come, a rematch against the old foe who failed to make an impression last season and would certainly be coming with a point to prove.
A rousing win by the Reserves and even more rousing rendition of the War Cry saw us take the fielding high spirits, as did the return to the field of the eldest Jewitt, thus completing the 'Jewitt triangle' once again. Whilst this bode well for us, a slightly shaky moment saw a shot inside the first 5 minutes require the timely obstruction of Giesh's gadget leg to stop it trickling goalward.
Following this minor scare, we took to the ball, moving it fluidly (or at least equally fluidly as the opposition) looking for the opportunity to set one of the faithful through for a venomous strike on goal. The opportunity did come in the first half, but Pi's half chance was sent whistling across the goal, coming agonisingly close.
The remainder of the half was very much consumed by the cut and thrust of the midfield and defensive units looking to see if they could poke holes in each other and drive the stake into one another's match winning ambitions. The closest the bad guys came were a couple of ill-taken free kicks just outside the box, but the reality was that both teams went in at the end of the initial stanza feeling that the game was there to be won.
A (very long) half time break later, we strode back out onto the fortress with a spring in our step and the ambition to bring home the chocolates. It did not, however, quite play out that way as the half progressed. Despite Jimmy and Chris rampaging down the wings and causing pain for the opposition and the injection of young Tom for his inaugural match, the incisive ball could not be executed by the good guys. The return of one of our key leaders in the midfield showed promise at times, but every attack was repelled.
As if in reply, Stevie was rallying the troops at our defensive end and Adam, Dougie and Jimmy were seeing off the bad guys' sorties before they had a chance to manifest themselves into anything meaningful. Corners were the main action of the half, with each team failing to capitalize.
The game looked to be playing itself out to a clean sheet draw, until… tragedy… Doug in his eagerness to dispossess his opposite number was adjudged to have brought him down unfairly (a very soft foul one would suggest, but called anyway). Despite the obligatory remonstrations and polite questioning, the referee duly waved all away and pointed to the spot. The loneliest man on the pitch during these times is the penalty taker and lonely he was, staring down at a spider-like Gieshy, waiting. A couple of false starts later and he drove the ball towards the bottom left-hand corner, only to see our faithful glove man earn his keep for a change, sending the ball safely away from danger and providing him an embarrassing conversation with his tem-mates after the game.
The excitement over, only one more opportunity came to pass (and of course it wasn't for us). The penalty-taker, with an opportunity to redeem, found himself inside the eighteen with ball a feet and Doug hot on his heels. He lashed out with his left only to see his shot parried away yet again. It was not to be his day.
The match came to its' inevitable end with neither team having troubled the scorers. 0 - 0 on the day and Fitzroy still to beat a Scotch team looking to improve on a sluggish start to the season. The return match, I am sure, will be a cracker.
