SCOTCHIES LET LEAD SLIP BUT OFF THE MARK FOR 2009
Following the round 1 postponement against Old Melbourne, Old Scotch went in to this match a little cold on warm up games away to a Mornington opponent on the up and happy with their opening round win against Endeavour Utd. The day had brightened up following plenty of overnight rainfall so the pitch was soft under foot, but the wind running downhill would perhaps play a factor in the result.
Straight from the kick off the REDS went for the jugular and carved the Mornington defence apart with their first meaningful attack. A good through ball to Nick Jewitt saw the visitors go 1-0 up as he slotted past a cold and bewildered Mornington handman.
More good pressure saw several half chances come the way of Old Scotch, but that final killer pass was missing. A few sloppy plays from defence gave the home side a sniff and Mornington began to press. A ball over the top of the Scotch defence bounced around like Bondy doing doggies, one which they failed to deal with and invited the annoying Scottish Morn midfielder through to challenge our handcheat. A kick in the chops was picked up by the ref and despite the home crowd's excitement he blew up for the infringement as Giesh clutched his abs to ensure everyone knew he'd been shot. The home side continued to work their way into the match with some dogged tussles in midfield ~ most notably between new OS boy Blake and their niggly #12. The latter was certainly in line for an early shower with some ordinary tackles, but the ref failed to punish the round little nugget.
Scotch had their moments as the half went on as the arm wrestle continued. A good forward thrust saw Nick Jewitt pick up a pass at the top of the box. A shuffle left then right saw him with a sight on goal from at least 20 yards, and with the Morn keeper off his line he sent in a curling shot top right corner to send the visiting supporters and bench into raptures. 2-0 and and cruising. Another half chance for the Mornington side meant OS had to be sharp and could not think the game was won. 2-0 at HT.
The second half we knew they would come at us ~ and they didn't disappoint. With the uphill climb for OS, now into a wind that was almost irrelevant, we still wanted that 3rd goal to kill them game off. The chance came from a mazy run form Jimmy Jewitt on the left, weaving in and out of traffic along the touch line, sending in a whipping back post cross to the head of hat-trick would-be hero and brother Nick, only to see his header miss the target to the disbelief of all onlookers. A great chance missed, but it was clear Scotch sill had the quality to create the chances.
At the other end, not soon after, Captain Dave gave away a poor free kick in a dangerous spot. The set up was non-existent as the defence went to sleep. Mornington took the free kick quickly, slotting the ball square and then chipping it over the defence to the onrushing striker to slice his lucky shot into the top right corner over the despairing dive of tallman Giesh. 2-1 and game on!
Scotch were showing signs of tiring and the equaliser appeared not too far away. Another set piece ensued, this time with a Stoke-Rory Delap-style long throw from the right into the box to an unmarked attacker, who nodded on to another Morn'ton striker to hammer home. The drunken scum in the crowd went nuts as they guzzled down their Bourbons and yelled gleeful cheers to their boys and abusive filth at the visiting crew.
To the Red's credit, they stepped up when they could have gone into their shells and gone behind. For the final 10 mins or so it remained an arm wrestle, but with Scotch doing their fair share of hard tackling all over the ground to ensure they left with at least a point. 2-2 it finished, with the visitors feeling like they'd lost the game and the home side thinking they'd won. It will be a tough place for others to come and get points, so the boys should be pleased with the point, but disappointed to let 3 slip away.
