SENIORS SET BACK AGAIN FROM BOTTOM TABLE DWELLERS
As is with all Fridays leading into the sacred Saturday, it was reserved by all players for rest and preparation. Heads hit pillows at 8pm and dreams of scoring, setting up and preventing goals danced in the heads of all. And then Eamonn woke…
The morning broke and the boys assessed the damage they inflicted upon their persons the previous evening and began to psyche themselves up for a second trip out to the suburban malaise in 8 days. It was unusually not raining as we arrived at the ground and the pitch had the look of a field that would be pretty good to move the ball around on, although a tricky wind blowing straight down the pitch looked to create a little havoc of its' own. After skillfully losing the toss and subsequently being politely asked to begin our assault with the winds at our back, the opening whistle was blown and we entered the fray.
From the kick-off, we displayed some of the dominance that has characterised our first halves for a large part of the season. The ball, as expected was moving smoothly across the pitch and with the Mighty Mouse setting the plays from the rear of midfield, we looked to put together some meaningful attacks. The pressure nearly paid of early with an attempt on goal from outside the 18 produced a fine save from the Doveton Keeper who was at full stretch, parrying the shot away.
The action continued to be with us as our wind assisted attacks saw the opposing glove man off his line and punching crosses and corners with monotonous regularity. And whilst we had the lion's share of the attack, the final ball seemed to be lacking, leaving us one step short of the opportunity to stretch the Doveton glove-cheat any further.
We trudged into the change rooms at the half knowing that we were going to have to put in a lot more in the second half to not only look to take the chocolates, but also ensure that we do not fall foul of the second half hoodoo we had been suffering for the previous weeks. This is hat was discussed in the rooms, a doubling of effort from the team was to be put in and the win still chased. No mistakes could be afforded and chances needed to be taken in order to get maximum points.
A determined team strode back out onto the park and looked to turn attacking dominance into a lead, but it was the bad guys that saw the first big chance. Within 5 minutes of the restart, the Doveton striker turned Laz and looked to advance on goal for a shot. Having been pushed wide, however, he could only stab it close to the legs of Giesh, who got a hand down to it, then collected the spillage.
Despite this aberration early on, we continued to press, holding the ball in the midfield and attempting to break through the defense with the incisive ball. The cut and thrust of the match saw the pill bouncing about the midfield, but not looking like it was going to find its' way towards either of the goals with any venom. With the match looking like it was going to be played almost entirely in the middle third, suddenly an incisive ball pierced the opposition defense and… wedged itself underneath Jewy's enormous feet ensuring he was little chance of controlling it, let alone putting a meaningful shot on goal. This, it proved, to be the second most exciting part of the half, only slightly pipped at the post by Giesh using Chris as a stepladder in his efforts to punch a corner clear of danger.
This was a match where, despite getting ourselves into some great positions, we failed to produce that final ball that resulted in a meaningful shot on goal (with the exception of one instance). It was certainly considered a great result for the home team, but can only be put into the books as another disappointing outcome for us. Despite this, our second half was a great deal stronger than those we have put in for the past few weeks and certainly a positive to draw on going into a very tough match against Old Camberwell at home.
