Match Report - Seniors 2009
SENIORS @ Monbulk
Round 10 - 13/06/2009
SENIORS MAINTAIN STRIKING DISTANCE ON TABLE LEADERS

The day broke and servicemen were called in to repair it at exorbitant penalty rates given it was on a Saturday and about 6:30 in the morning.  As they only managed to perform minor repairs, getting it up and running, but failing to get the heaters running, we were in for another bitterly cold day (it's so hard to get good help these days) and doubly so given we were off to Jam Country!

In indefatigable Monbulk form, there had been rain (or there had not been rain, but the pitch has the kind of water retention issue that can only be solved by Jenny Craig).  In addition to this, it would appear that the only mower in Monbulk had broken, meaning that the knee length grass would need to be waded through.

Fortunately, the goal box had more sand in it than… well… (insert Baywatch babe reference here as I cannot due to this being a family publication), for if it was as well grassed as the remainder, we may have lost little Mike in his first outing for the seniors since pre-season.

On to the game then!  Knowing the challenge always put forth by Monbulk, there was no complacency going into this match.  The boys knew they were up for a challenge and with the top two in sight, only a win would do.  Monbulk went in hard from the start (as is to be expected) and within two minutes, a solid clash of bodies between Chris and their left-winger saw the latter clatter to the deck with a newly acquired suspect knee.  A new player was brought out of the rack and regular programming resumed.

Monbulk were desperate to bring home the points given their current situation and the Jam fanciers came in hard and early.  A strong move down the right seeing a corner finding the head of one of their midfielders only to loop into Mikey's hands.  Within minutes, our boy in blue was called into action again, forced to turn a low shot around the upright.  A large portion of the run was coming from the lowly placed opposition with the good guys being forced to counter-attack. When we were getting it up forward, the attacks were, however, meaningful, with the ever-industrious Pi troubling their defense and the strength of Jewy causing them all sorts of concern.

Despite this, it was the opposition that were presented with a gilt-edged opportunity when Mike came for a loose ball at the right-hand point of the 6-yard box only to see it find it's way to the feet of the opposition.  A savage strike hit an unsuspecting Jimmy flush in the back and sent the ball spinning back to the bad guys who, despite the ensuing goalmouth pinball found the defense too hard to penetrate. Disaster averted…

The following 10 minute period saw us find some flow and the ball began to behave in the manner we prefer it to.  A quick move saw Jewy break away down the left and, seeing Pi streaming towards goal on the right, he lofted a beautiful ball which met our onrushing man, only to be stroked past the upright.

Fortunately, we found ourselves attacking again within minutes and won the corner.  The resultant delivery saw a goalmouth scramble, leading to an attempted clearance cannoning into Muz and coming to rest in front of a waiting Jimmy, just outside the box.  He drew back the coiled spring that is his left and let it go, meeting the pill with venom and sending it, as if it were a guided missile, through the traffic and just inside the right hand upright.  1 - 0 and the crowd went wild (and I mean it, there was actually somewhat of a crowd there, for us, believe it or not).

The highlights for the remainder of the half will include Mike primarily (although it would be remiss of me to fail to mention the gift that was presented to the normally lethal head of Chris which he conspired to send sailing past the upright).  I will focus on the aforementioned for two reasons; firstly, a loose ball in the box saw him come sliding out to smother the shot of the desperately unlucky striker. The second, well, that deserves its' own paragraph.

A move down the right saw Monbulk with ball at feet just inside the box.  With Muz on his tail, the offender showed the ball enough for the little fella to stick a toe in and send the pill careening away, collecting the player on the follow through.  In their infinite stupidity, the incompetent linesman coupled with the whistle-happy ref to conjure a penalty.  Up steps the bad guy's highest scorer to the spot, facing the larger than life penalty specialist that is Mike Olroyd.  True to form, Mikey held his ground, as the nugget was sent high and to his right.  Lightening reflexes saw him meet the ball with two hands, sending the orb sailing away from goal and righting the scales of justice.

Within minutes, a further forward movement saw Fredy rise to head the ball away, only to have his feet taken out from underneath him by the Hobbit in their forward line.  Upon being unceremoniously upended, the porky little fella then proceeded to land on our Swedish Sweeper's ankle, turning it badly and seeing him off the pitch for the remainder of the match.

A quick reshuffle saw Jonny come on up front and Jewy move back into the sweeping position.  The remainder of the half saw us repelling the rampaging hordes and needless to say, the boys were very happy to hear the man in black blow up for the end of the half.

The second half will be paraphrased given my word use to date and Wardy's strident views about my penchance for verbosity.  Adam was a non-starter for the second half due to a doughy hamstring, which saw Tom on and Laz back to pick up.  Whilst his initial moments were spent in the defensive midfield role, and inspired coaching change (by Jewy as it happens… go figure) saw him swap with Dave who was charged with marshalling the troops for the onslaught that was coming.  And come it did.

The remainder of the half consisted of wave after wave of the bad guys, desperate to find the equalizer and unapologetically infringing upon our personal space with every opportunity available to them.  A number of corners were won and whilst there were certainly some nervous moments, the defense was holding firm… just.

It was then that Pi went ping! Not with ball at feet though.  Unfortunately dear reader, it would appear that he had borrowed a hamstring from Jewy this day and as we all know, fine bone china is apt to break under pressure, which is exactly what happened.  A third man off through injury and Aaron was sent in the fray to provide a solitary target up front for the final 10 minutes (on the off chance our opponents would give us a moment's respite).  Whilst an opportunity did fall to us between then and the final whistle, the remainder of the half was spent with the faithful under enormous pressure.

Whilst some loose defending at times saw half chances fizz past the goal and get blasted into the legs, bodies and head of our desperate defense, the line was held and, upon the dulcet tones of a final whistle, we knew we had ground out a hard-fought win.  Special mention to those blokes in the back line today - Doug, Adam, Fredy, Jewy, Jimmy, Laz - as they got the job done under enormous pressure (with a little help from the midfield and odd attacker).  It may not have been pretty boys, but it was 3 points.

This win sees us retain 4th spot and within a sniff of 2nd provided we can keep the pressure on those above.  With a big game against 2nd placed Monash next week, it will be important for us to hold firm at the back whilst mounting some strong attacks to ensure we are in best position to push for promotion in the second half of the season.

Final Score: 1 - 0
