PRACTICE MATCH RESULT SADLY GOES ASTRAY
It was like the film Friday Night Lights, but instead of NFL it was football and it was a Wednesday night as the Royals had a catch up game against Beaumaris. Last time they meet the ref would not sanction the game and a 2-2 draw was played out with Roylance officiating, this was again the case with the referee not attending. Will and Rob were helping out as we attempted our first win of the season. Tempers flared as Reahan and others got involved in a slanging game with the opposition, Terry tried shutting up opposition players who were overall critical of the amateur referee. Our plan was to use the width, pass along the deck and score goals. Things did not go to plan as we conceeded a few early goals from defensive errors, including an own goal from Julian who attempted to stop the ball, do an electric boogaloo and then clear it, unfortunately it cannoned off him into the goals. We were always behind in this game but as usual our efforts were slightly better in the second half and Rob Gillies latched on to a through ball to make it a 4-1 loss to the Royals. The pitch was sensational but we were outclassed again unfortunately as we look towards a relegation battle.

(From 28th June) PRACTICE MATCH PLAYED AS APPOINTED REFEREE GOES WALKABOUT
Once more I came down to HA Smith to watch us play a game against Beaumaris, this was a game that we could win surely. I was excited to sit down and watch the team play whilst eatting a toasted roast chicken footlong on italian herbs and cheeses bread. This was not the case however as I came to the ground around 1pm to see the game had not yet started. I assumed it was our favourite referee who liked to turn up at 1.04pm and then slowly put his correct shoes on then demand the books instantly. I was wrong it was a new ref, who was here but declared that he did not want to referee our game. His reason was that he could not see the lines, he also muttered a bit about safety but im not too sure what was said. I'm not sure where he went but both teams agreed to play a practise match, one thing was missing from this equation tho, a referee. Peer pressure forced me to be the referee, so i was forced to swallow my subway and walk onto the park in my sling. Those who know me well know that I whinge to referees a lot on the weekend, perhaps this was payback.
Anyway enough about me, now for the game! The game started pretty poorly for us as we failed to string through some decent passes and often some men were not picked up correctly. Beaumaris slotted a through ball to their forward, OFFFSIDEEEEEEEEE everyone yelled at me, I quickly glanced at the linesman who had his flag down and by the time I was looking back at the goal mouth action the ball was in the back of the net. By this stage it also became apparent I wasnt sure when I had to use my whistle, cries of handball and REFEREE!!! were ignored as I set out for some free flowing football. Scotch absorbed a lot of pressure in the first half and were left chasing shadows with few scoring chances. What also became clear was that my OSSC polo shirt was being mistaken for a playing shirt and I often had to dodge away from the ball, one Kosta kick smashing me in the back. At half time the score was 1-0.
In the second half a much more determined Royals team came out as we pushed our way back into the match. After a series of corners for the Royals, Terry hit in a delightful cross which met Reahans head and flew into the back of the net. The Royals were happy to have scored a goal and get back in the match, and I was happy that there could be no complaining about this goal. This gave us momentum and we pushed for further goals everyone was linking well in the midfield and the defence was tight and gave keeper Nick little to do for most of the half. Reahan slotted a second goal which had a few pundits wondering if it was a cross or a goal, at the end of the day the ball in the back of the net is cause for celebration and Reahan had his second of the day. (Reahan fun fact number 1, This season he has played Goalkeeper, man marking defender, midfielder, winger and striker...Reahan fun fact number 2, he works at Grill'd). For only the third time this season the Royals were winning a game and this caused Beaumaris to play better football as they strived to get back into the match. This meant Nick, Kosta and Jules found themselves with more work to do, each needing to quickly shut down their opponents. Whilst the game was taking place Tiddy and Aaron were walking around the ground fixing all the white lines so that the 3rds could play with the referee after this game, relief I wouldnt have to do it again! Beaumaris were playing like a team possessed and the run of play and a series of corners, one through ball led to Jules collecting the ball and barging the player over, both players hit the deck and PENALTY was screamed at me. I thought it was a 50-50 challenge and that the ball was collected, either way I didnt give the penalty and one player remonstrated with me, I told him that his first goal was offside but it was still given and he stopped yelling and started talking to me, which was nice, it sucks getting yelled at haha. New player Nick Thomas was having a tough day in midfield having to man mark a play maker who wouldnt stop running, a tug on the shirt was done and I had no choice but to blow for a free kick, in talking to their captain about whether they wanted 10 I missed an apparent spit at Nick which I only found out after the game, either way I had no cards but it would have been nice to brandish one. The freekick was a ripper, it dipped at the last moment and keeper Nick couldnt reach it, 2-2 was the score now and both teams had something to play for now. Terry hit a beautiful cross to the open Jake on the right wing which was a shame because Jake was the linesman and was not wearing any fluro. Terry made up for this with a delightful through ball to Rolo, who although was accurate failed to keep the ball down as it went over the fences.
The final score was 2-2, both teams could feel annoyed about not winning, but at the end of the day there was no proper ref, I think i gave three free kicks the whole game, everyone said I swallowed my whistle, but as long as both teams complained I feel I did ok. This was deemed a practice match and we need to play them again in the catch up round, from the performance of both teams today I feel this game will be an important game for us to slowly move up the ladder.
