ROYALS AVOID WOODEN SPOON IN FINAL GAME THRILLER
Before I start writing up this report, I just want everyone to know that we actually won this game. Maybe I should have thrown SPOILER ALERT before that sentence, i was just too excited to go through some play by play information before the final whistle and score would be announced. To Recap, last season we Lost 17 and won 1 game. This season before the game we had drawn 4 games but were yet to pick up a victory in the 2009 season. Although some saw a 1 point improvement as an improvement, we knew that if we won this game, we could possibly avoid the wooden spoon, which was something a few of the veterans from last year were hoping for. The squad was bolstered by the return of Goldmember Bob Gilles, Nick H and Ian Enderby, all three of these men would have a great say in the proceedings of the game. We were playing Beaumaris who we had already encountered this season more than once, an unofficial game resulted in a 2-2 draw, where as a catch up game saw them trounce us 1-4, we suspected they had some ring ins for this game, and were upset that we lost a valued point due to this.
Anyway back to the game, we had a squad of 13 which was better than last weeks 11 which would become 10 due to the unfair sending off of Paris. Before the game really got into its motions Scotch won a free kick, the aftermath of which was somewhat humorous. Bob, Terry and Ali all went to take the dead ball as if it was some form of golden ticket, Terry was remembering his assist that led to Roylance scoring last week, Bob/Goldmember was thinking of shooting as he does even in defence and Ali was just being Ali. In the end Ali won this stand over and put in a great ball which bounced around before the evergreen Steve Wright got to the ball and smashing it in the back of the net. We were winning, and hopefully Caulfield werent at this stage so we could avoid the spoon. Fast forward some ten minutes or so we had surrended the lead with an opposition winger snaring a somewhat lucky brace, the first goal the bounced fooled everyone and for the second he ghosted into the box to slot it past Nick the Keeper. But there was something different about today, the last few weeks we have been more competitive and we knew we were here for a fight. A chased through ball led to their GK punching the ball outside of his box and resulted in Bob/Goldmember taking a freekick which was quite close. We had a series of corners and were playing with more spirit than we had shown in all our games combined. Nick H had a shot that bounced around and somehow landed at Roylances feet where he managed to turn a defender leaving him one on one with the keeper. Unfortunately the ball was stuck a little bit under his foot and he went for power and not placement which resulted in the keeper making a save and pushing it over the crossbar. In the midst of all this attacking Rolo and Dan were playing well on the flanks limiting player attacks whilst Shayne was mopping up at the back. The score remained at 1-2 til half time but we thought this was our game to win, spoiler alert, it was, well you knew that anyway.
The second half was a fiercely competitive affair and the fouls started popping up. Bob/Goldmember managed to ghost his way into the box and hit an equaliser and the game was back on. Shortly after this though a Beaumaris player hit a rocket of a shot from distance that left Nick with no chance. Even though we were trying to fight our way back into the game we had to stand for a moment in admiration of that shot. Things after this started to go our way however, Beaumaris had a player sent off for dissent and we knew this was our game to win. Ian Enderby popped up and slotted one into the back of the net which leveled the game with about twenty minutes left, his first for the season and an important one for the Royals. From this moment the game took the form of a basketball match with one side attacking and then the next. Time was ticking on and we knew a draw would not be enough for us to avoid the spoon. Terry was playing a quarterback role and trying to set off our wingers with accurate through balls. Nick H was proving a threat all game with his runs in from the wing. One run lead him into the penalty box where he managed to hit one into the back of the net and the lead was ours again! We had thrown away 0-1 to be losing 2-1, snatched back 2-2 only to see it rocketed to 3-2 and now with ten or so minutes remaining the score was 3-4 in favour of the Royals. Roger and Jules stepped up when it counted and were essential in the latter stages of this game. Ali dropped deeper and also was important in keeping the score in favour of the good guys. Beaumaris were under pressure and passed the ball back to their keeper, Roylance went to pressure the goalie and hopefully force him to kick it out and give us an attack from a promising position. The Goalie did clear the ball, but straight into the groin of Roylance who stumbled to the ball, an overzealous defender put his arm around the shoulder of Roylance and tried to move him. Roylance already suffering some balance issues following his shot to the groin fell and we were rewarded with our second penalty of the season. Terry confidently walked up to the spot as Roylance slowly limped off the field holding a rather sore spot. Terry looking for his second penalty goal of his season hit it to the right of the keeper only to see the keeper save it. That would have put us 3-5 with not long remaining and surely victory would have been assured. The referee spotted a defender encroaching and gave us a second chance to score from the spot, this time Terry hit it straight and the keeper didnt move and palmed it away. Let the record state here that Terry Maiolo had two penalties saved in a row. Beaumaris pushed for an equaliser and Nick the Keeper was not troubled, one overhead kick did sail dangerously close to the post though. The final whistle went, our first win of our season, we assumed Caulfield playing Haileybury werent going to win and as a result we would have avoided the the spoon. Its a shame Julian didnt bring his tub of gatorade this week, because surely it would have been poured over someone.
This season although better than last season has been a frustration for a lot of players, injury and getting thumped does not help your confidence, but the last three weeks showed what the team can really offer. Next season down a division we should be looking for promotion if we retain all our players and fight with the same passion. On behalf of the Royals i'd like to thank all those involved behind the scene especially Shayne and Terry who bravely lead us and never gave up hope! Also big shoutouts go to Bob who won the Goldenboot despite playing in half the games and Nick the keeper who answered an SOS, be proud son we conceeded less goals than we did last season! Also we probably had over 25 different players throughout the season, so thanks to all of those players as well. In conclusion, Royals come play next year, where we will go in search of more than 7 points and Terry wont take penalties and hopefully Shayne gets naked less!
Final Score: Beaumaris 3 Old Scotch 4
