DOWNED BY A WONDER GOAL
At the very fringes of Melbourne, those of us who made the trek out to the Croydon paddock were greeted by chain-link fences and a faded chalkboard sign that read "Spectators $5, Pensioners $3". Terry, Steve and Shayne paid $3 bucks each.
Unfortunately, the entire Croydon team would have squeezed in on concession prices and we prepared to be dazzled by youthful exuberance and enthusiasm.
Determined to play organised and structured football, the Royals got a decent foothold on the game early on as Dan M threatened with pace and Rolo stamped opposition players into the ground. Unfortunately, we were struck out by a couple of quick goals in the 16th and 18th minutes as Croydon ran through a defence that was struggling to come to terms with quick runs and lay offs. Admittedly, Reahan's cracked rib might have held him back a little bit.
The gods smiled on us and we were awarded a penalty when Dan M threw a ball against their central defender's hand. We are planning on making that a standard Royals tactic. Terry then tucked the ball past the keeper and it was 2-1 at the halftime break.
We played even better in the second half, controlling the game down the wings and setting the tempo of the game. In fact, we were so comfortable on the ball that Nick B and Shayne even had the gall to play a one-two off a goal kick. It would have been good if they'd told the rest of the team what was going on though.
Unfortunately, as we pushed up for the goal, we were sucker punched for a couple of goals. There was no stopping Croydon's fourth goal which swerved, bent and curled past Brian and Nick into the back of the net. At the final whistle, we walked off beaten but not cowed as we'd come to play and done exactly that.
Final Score 4-1 to Croydon
