Match Report - Royals 2009
ROYALS v Old Haileubury SC
Round 10 - 12/07/2009
INABILITY IN FRONT OF GOAL COSTS ROYALS

The Royals are now half way through our season and today we faced the return leg of our opponents Haileybury. A determined and solid 15 man squad today also included the return of club legend Shayne Francis and return of new recruit Marcos. The ground had fresh lines and a match official who we thought didn't hate us. Our opponents beat us 5-1 last time and by the looks of the ladder we'd face fierce competition again today. Haileybury took the lead after the ball bobbled badly away from Jules and their podgy opportunist striker took his chance and slotted the ball through the legs of Nick the keeper. Fetching the ball out of the back of our net is becoming a somewhat annoying habit for Nick who is used to being a hockey keeper. A few minutes later they had a burst of pace from the wing and delivered a precision cross to a giant who was marked by Bruce the emergency, unfortunately height was against Bruce the emergency as their striker notched up their second goal.

This two goal cushion did little to settle either of the teams, Haileybury were annoyed at the way they were playing and the Royals were determined to get back into the game. Daniel took matters into his own hands by cutting in from the wing and letting off a shot which struck the post and cannoned agonizingly away from the back of the net. Haileybury then had a shot of their own connecting to the woodwork; this was fast becoming an open game. Bruce the emergency then performed a dazzling run which was reminiscent of Ryan Giggs Semi final FA cup goal against Arsenal in the treble season; however this run by Bruce the emergency was not so fruitful. The keeper Nick then sprung into life with a series of fine saves including a precision perfect keeper charge that any FIFA 2009 player would have been proud of. The half time score was 0-2 and although we had not had many chances, we were not out of this game.

As usual the half time talk consisted of the usual demand for more man accountability and showing of the front bottom. Shayne made up this quota of front bottom with a lunge on an opponent's ankle, the ball was there somewhere I think. Before Shayne even had the chance to even smirk about his bad tackle he was on the receiving end of a described 'A-Grade strangulation'. This fracas could have developed into a melee, tensions were raised and their manager White Ray Charles demanded a red for Shayne, whilst we thought the strangulation master would receive a red for his efforts. It seemed the referee however left all his cards at home and did not card anyone despite the likely probability that two reds were warranted. Marcos in his return match was proving a menace to the opposition defenders until a hand injury forced him off early. The loss of Bob to the thirds and injury to last years golden boot winner Pete Roylance, options up front were running out. In a managerial master stroke Terry pushed Brian up front who had a series of chances including a well hit cross/shot. Haileybury grabbed a third goal from a pinball like effort which managed to elude Nick. The final score was 0-3 to Haileybury; this was a solid effort for the Royals as they performed admirably against a higher quality opposition and bettered the result from the first time we played them.

Kosta is establishing himself as a solid sweeper and the Martin brothers are proving to be a handy edition wherever they are placed in the line up. Once again our inability in front of the goals helped lead to our downfall, we have tightened up in defense but we have some big tests ahead in the form of Croydon and RMIT. We need to win against the lower teams in the remainder of the season including the catch up game on Wednesday night under lights which include the return of the current leading goal scorer of the Royals and Red Bob/Rob Gilles and flashy new import Aaron. Beaumauris should be our first on the season but either way as the result today showed we have improved and hopefully will continue to do so with no more strangulations.

Final: 0-3
