Round 8 - 23/05/2009
DJ W-E TO THE S PUMPS UP SCOTCH TO ANOTHER 3 POINTS AT HAPLESS ASHBURTON

The Ressies squad was treated to some fine DJ work before the warm-up from DJ W-E to the S on his iPhone (and yes, there's an app for that!). The house tracks lifted a few eyebrows and errs from the older folk in the port-a-room who requested The Bay City Roller or for the captain, an old peer in Mozart. Those that have endured a few stoushes with the Ashy side over the years didn't need the extra motivation to want to put one over a team that was once a cross suburb rival.

After the initial feeling out process of the first ten minutes, Scotch began to hammer the Ashy defence who stupidly decided to try and play the offside trap but neither had the skill nor speed to recover. The centre three of Wes, Doc and Pallis began taking over possession with neat touches. It wasn't long before a through ball by Dawsy to Alex saw a chip over the keeper drop higher than the crossbar. This was as ominous a sign as switching from his favoured number thirteen, or even a total eclipse during play. Fortunately for him, a million dollar cross from Blake earned him a shot at redemption and was indeed able to loop the keeper for the opener.

Scotch didn't stop there and it was a grave mistake for the ref to pull up Wes for an errant offside after he deftly chipped the keeper. At the other end, Mike was spotted rolling a week's worth of smokes and dreaming of the mother country.

At the interval, Beamer concurred at the run of play and decided to make a few changes at the break. With Steve and Wes making way for Marinos and a renewed Daz, some roles were shuffled including the masterstroke of hiking Pallis up to his former role of a barn-door target man.

But it was his pace that saw him run onto a Bondy clearance and curl a shot into the top corner. The man who wants to regain his scoring title returned to the goalscoring dais with aplomb as not long after, Alex turned supplier and cut back from the by-line for Pallis to finish off for a second. Gaps began to appear as Scotch started rushing their defence like the Allies against the Italians. Two gifts were atrociously fluffed by Alex, and Ashy began to argue with not only the ref but also themselves. It was good to see Jarrod get a nod and replacing Doc who received the call up.

Perhaps pity was a better excuse for playing out the remainder of the game at half pace. Yes, Ashy did have a couple of good chances, one hitting the woodwork while the other fantastically saved by Mike, but the resolute Scotch defence with Captain Bondy, PC and Jimmy were holding up the defence well. With Blake on Globetrotter duty, Ashy began a hacking display only seen before in horror films. Blake was spotted after the final whistle, hanging outside the ref's shed to continue his pursuit of a few free kicks.

A comfortable win that was flattering to Ashburton. Scotch could've gained some needed goal difference with some sceptics already bemoaning the discrepancies with those ahead on the ladder. However, that is a superfluous element at the moment, and much too early in the season to postulate. Solid three points are needed as well as fit and dedicated personnel to achieve them.

Final Score: 3 - 0
(A Petrakos, P Pallis 2)
