Round 7 - 16/05/2009
PETRAKOS BRACE COUNTERS CAPTAIN'S CONTRIBUTION

Boots? $200. Shinpads? $25. Brand spanking new captain's armband bought ten years ago to be worn on a Saturday against Fitzroy City? Priceless. This is the story unravelling in Bondy's mind last Saturday morning after being told he would captain the Ressies against a Fitzroy City side that had drawn in their past two encounters against the Reds. One almost fainted when he overheard the captain say in the change room, "This doesn't fit around my cannons!"

Minds were sharp as a healthy band of players turned out to help with the fortnightly disaster of setting up. For the first time, players could focus on the game at hand with plenty of time for a long warm up. It seemed laughable that the Fitzroy outfit were the unorganised team, starting with nine before two more players showed up and then having three subs in the second half.

Events picked up quickly in the game as Scotch pressed the Fitzroy team in their own half. It was with good preparation that Dawsy was able to break from his defender and slot a great shot through the keeper's near post. It wasn't long either when Alex was able to do the same when most players had stopped to complain to the ref as he casually flicked the ball snugly inside the far post.

From there, the Reds relaxed and fell away to the psyche of being able to walk the ball into the net. Complacency crept in, as Fitzroy played well above their lowly position on the table. With a dangerous two goal lead, it wasn't long before cracks began to appear in the normally resolute defence of Bondy, Jimmy, PC and Cam. It didn't help that the Reds couldn't keep control of the ball for long. Mike's post was rattled a good couple of times before a shot had deflected from Bondy's head and snuck through Mike's near post.

In a show of disgust at half-time, Pip said a few words and left the rooms with a one goal cushion that looked ever-so-likely to be lost on the play so far.

In the second half the midfield of Pallis, Blake, Wes and Steve, began to perk up more and link properly. However it was a Fitzroy mistake in their backline that gifted Alex an interception and a nice run into goal for a one-on-one with their keeper. He carefully passed it in restoring a two goal lead and caused the Fitzroy team to sink their heads. He could've completed a hat-trick with a carbon copy of the previous goal except the keeper made a fantastic save.

With Al coming on to inject some fresh pace up front, and Pip and Marinos to sure the Reds up, it was the man of the moment, the colossus they call "Bondy" who misjudged a kick out and let it bounce over his meaty frame and onto the path of a Fitzroy player who was able to find his fellow striker to infuse some urgency in the last few minutes.

But it was not to be. Scotch was able to hang on to a solid three points but will have to play better in order to grab gold against better opposition. With a logjam at the top of the table, only two points separate half the teams in the league. And with a game in hand, Scotch is now well poised to capitalise.

Final score: 3 - 2
(A Petrakos 2, D Daws)
