Match Report - Reserves 2009
RESERVES v Doveton
Round 5 - 02/05/2009
SCOTCH BLOWS MAN ADVANTAGE TO SUFFER FIRST LOSS

It was a typical clear and sunny afternoon that greeted the Reserves this round, and along with the state of the pitch, their opponents proved a hard team to crack.

Despite the green boogers (or is that bogans?) from Doveton being mid-table, the first half was an even affair. With the ref blowing for every niggle, the battle lied in the middle of the park as both teams vied for supremacy to get the ball into the final third. The Red's five-man-midfield battled hard, with Wardy especially standing out in the first half. The corner count began to rack up, but there was little in the way of chances. Only Alex, deciding to try a Roberto Carlos from Riversdale Road came somewhat close but didn't trouble the keeper.

Disaster struck when Greavesy rolled his ankle causing Pete Pallis to forgo his extensive stretching regime and come on in haste. With frustration setting in for everybody at the chirp of the refs whistle it was surprisingly not Pallis that broke ranks but the number 14 goblin whose profanity was overheard and misconstrued to be directed at the ref. A severe bout of megalomania coupled with rage forced his hand to show a red card just before half time.

The second half however proved to be shambolic. Scotch pressed their advantage in the Doveton half but failed to provide the necessary blow they needed to make their numerical advantage count. A standout second half by debutant Steve helped, but the stacked and organised Doveton defence gave little away. A Pallis free kick missed its mark while Las missed the best chance of the game.

Doveton relied on counter-attacking to muster up any chance of a victory and it paid off late in the game when a break found its way to their strikers who were able to get a clear-cut shot away. Mike, who was having a quiet day thanks to a rock solid defence, was out of reach and collective heads sank at the thought of going a goal down to ten men. 0-1. The final minutes were hectic and unfortunately frenzied, with the task of trying to crack Doveton. But it was too little, too late.

On the whole, it was a bitterly disappointing day to see an unbeaten run come to an end in such a fashion. There were no villains but the team as a whole and Lady Luck. The Reds will need to go back to the drawing board and perhaps be a little better organised come game day to be fresh and focused on the game at hand.

0-1 the final score.
