UNBEATEN START CONTINUES AT HA SMITH
The Reds were home at the Fortress for the first time this season and trying to maintain their unbeaten run to the start of the season to the newly relegated Endeavour Utd. The first two matches had been punctuated with improved second half performances, so guess what - Pip decided to introduce the half-time spray early! And it worked.
After Eamonn decided to take the whistle for a non-appearing ref, a minutes silence was held in remembrance of ANZAC Day and those that had fallen to save our great land (HA Smith included)! There were the usual merry-go-rounds in the starting line up. Alfie sweeping with Doidgey, Bondy and Maz (back from injury) in the back line. Blake and Wardy in the holding midfield roles with Las and Wes playing out wide. Greavesy was the lone striker supported by Daz just in behind him. The Scotchies started well, dominated the first half with the wind at their backs. Mikey had a smart save to make down low to his right, but aside from that Scotch notched up a few half chances before they got got their just desserts when Greavesy finished off a nice through ball to slot in under the keeper for a 1-0 lead after 30 mins. That is the way it stayed to half time with Endeavour finding it difficult to get into the game.
The Ref finally got his GPS to work and made it to the ground for the commencement of the second half - much to Eamonn's relief as he was starting to feel a bit of grief from the travelling fans and players. Early in the second half Dawsy, much to everyone's surprise, replaced Maz at left back. The surprise was that Dawsy, much like Bondy, only uses the left to lean on every once in a while and swings it a bit like an axe during a Friday the Thirteenth horror movie! This was followed shortly after by Pallis replacing Blake for his turn at warming the Seniors bench after putting in a solid 60 min performance.
Dawsy, however, didn't need his left foot and shortly after coming on he unleashed a right foot drive that whizzed over the crossbar. Who was to know this was a sign of things to come!! Ten minutes later and he was off again. This time cutting in on to his favoured right foot and letting go with a thunderous blast that rocketed in to the roof of the net from about 20 yards. The tiring Wes played his part with the one-two down the left flank to release Dawsy. A truly spectacular strike and 2-0 to the good guys.
The Scotchies held firm for the remaining 10 mins. Then, with seconds to go an errant back pass from Alfie was erringly picked up by Mikey and an indirect free-kick was awarded by the ref just inside the penalty area. Now the Endeavour Utd striker was unable to hit the side of the barn but somehow managed to hit Bondy's backside (not sure which is bigger???), via the underside of the crossbar, and the ball snuck over the line. The referee's notebook showed "N.Bond - O.G."
Only time left for the restart to be taken and the whistle blew for a 2-1 win to the Scotchies. A great team performance with the back four doing exceptionally well but not overshadowing a Dawsy cracker that was well worth being the deciding goal!!
2-1 the final score.
Greavesy and Dawsy the goal scorers, as well as Bondy for Endeavour Utd.
