RESERVES SETTLE FOR FIRST 3 POINTER OF THE SEASON
The Ressies this week took a short trip down to Warragul to play a similar team to the one it was matched up against last season. With Warragul receiving a flogging the previous round, it would be an interesting affair and a stern test for the Reds, dressed in choking white for the occasion, complete with 12 year-old socks.
The first five minutes showed that Scotch could stamp their authority on the game. Slick passing especially in the midfield with the trio of Laz, Daz and Marty ensured an optimistic start on a pitch rejuvenated from last season and as big as the gap between some of the local's teeth. However, the tide quickly turned with Warragul, led by a well skilled and well rehearsed in the art of complaining, number 22. A few defensive lapses from Alf enabled a couple of real scares to the Scotch goal. The defensive line of Cam, Jimmy D (back where he belongs) and the lone ranger, Pete Court, had to work hard in containing their onslaught. It was fortunate for the team that Laz was able to compete aptly against their playmaker and Mike in goal making spectacular saves when needed.
But from the terrific pace of the game, there was going to be at least one goal from the half. Laz and Alex linked extremely well down the left wing, and along with strikers Greavesy and Pallis, tested the Warragul defense. Daz, who has been spotted with nose bleeds from playing too high up on the pitch had a powerful shot dealt with. It was eventually settled by an interception by Alex from a keeper's throw who controlled and through-balled a long, high cross that bounced and made its was to Greavesy's noggin. Undealt with by the Warragul defence, his little header towards an open goal bobbled in. 1-nil. Praising the bucket of energy drink he had before the game, it was enough for Scotch to see off the first half's play.
Pip's half-time address was of mixed emotion as he called for better passing and more thoughtful selections in play. The team took note and were forced to think back to the previous round when they let a one goal lead slip.
They duly delivered in the second half. The short passing work was exceptional as Scotch were collected on the ball and with better movement was able to negate any early notions they would let Warragul back in the game. Alfie made up for his previous mishaps and stepped up as a captain as, despite being late to the game, a captain should. With Marty on senior's duty, a debut for Wes in a straight swap proved dividends as he easily accustomed himself to the style of play filling the holes now creeping in the midfield as the game wore on.
As Warragul made tactical switches in formation and playing roster, it became a more free-flowing game. Dawsy's introduction for Cam again proved fruitful adding even more red-hot pace in the backline. Scotch still pushed forward when the opportunity arose and Pallis, quiet for the first half, began weaving his magic but was unfortunate not to seal the game after routing the keeper from a Greavesy pass. Alfie's diminutive size didn't stop him from having a great chance on goal from a corner. Shots from Pip, who replaced Laz late on, and Daz were well struck but didn't trouble the keeper.
Some home refereeing troubled the game at the end although at least he was being consistently crap throughout. Number 22 enjoyed making love to the grass more than once upon ever-so-slightly a suggestion. A foolishly awarded free kick directly in front saw a youngster blast the chance over the goal. At the final whistle, the Reds were happy to travel a fair distance for their first three points of the season.
Final Score: 1-0
