Match Report - Reserves 2009
PRICELESS MOMENTS NOT ENOUGH

New boots: $150.
New shinpads: $30.
Nice schoolboy haircut: $35.
Pulling your shorts way up high like Harry Highpants: free.
Pulling rank as the President of the club to get the Coach to put you up front as a striker to break an eight season goal scoring drought: Priceless!

The Ressies turned up to the Fortress for the last home game of the season. Our home record had stood up fairly well with 5 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses. The squad assembled before the match to take the team photos with a couple of new faces ideally making their debut in time to get in the photo and a few regular faces missing. Bondy (Seniors), Cam and Alex (holidays) were absent and Jon and Neil from the Thirds were making their debuts on a Saturday. Pete Court, who has been a stalwart for Old Scotch for many, many years, was given the Captain's armband for what may be his last game for the Ressies at HA Smith Reserve.

We were against the hicks from Monbulk, who had embarrassed us with a defeat at their place and we were up for some revenge! And the game started that way with the Reds playing quite well. Alfie was back in at Sweeper, announcing before the game that he was going to Sweep in front of the centre backs, not behind them, in more of a Libero role. Franz Beckenbauer eat your heart out! In front, or perhaps I should say behind, him were PC and Jon. The midfield of Daz and Marty were aided by Steve H and Maz out wide and Greavesy supporting the front two of Pallis and ... err ... (this is not a typo) ... Wardy! Wardy, who must have remembered Scotch's infamous 22-1 victory against today's opponents back in 2001, must have obviously pulled rank as El Presidente and demanded to be named up front. That was the last time he had scored for the club at this level and must have thought he was half a chance again.

In the first half we were playing downhill towards the freeway with the wind at our backs and we created a number of chances. In the opening few minutes Daz had a cracking shot across the face of goals that just whizzed over the crossbar. Greavesy had a header that went wide, a shot that he scuffed wide and then from a flowing move Steve H knocked in a cross that bobbled as Greavesy was about to apply the finishing touch and the ball sailed over the bar. A neat run from Pallis on the right ended with him whipping in a cross to the far post for Marty to head just wide. The openings were there again but we just couldn't apply the finishing touch.

And then came the best chance of the half following a bit of luck when a Monbulk defender inadvertently knocked the ball onto his own hand and the ref pointed to the spot! Up stepped Pallis, the Old Scotch Kevin Muscat (and not just because of their penalty conversion rate comparison but also perhaps because of their disciplinary records). The man who has not missed from the spot at Senior and Ressie level for Old Scotch was on a run of about 10 in a row. This, unfortunately, was when that run was to end with the keeper saving well, down low to his right and Pallis unable to convert the rebound.

The only effort that Mikey had to be wary of in the first half was a thunderbolt that cannoned off Mikey's best mate and our 12th man (the crossbar) and away to safety. But as the lads went into the break we were quite confident we could knock off the jam makers in what was a pretty open game. Pip was confident but Eamonn was only confident that he had a great hamburger in his hands!

As the second half commenced Greavesy pulled up lame with a sore buttock (who knows what he gets up to in the gym!) and was replaced by Doidgey. Ten minutes later and Jon was on a run when he looked like he'd been shot with an elephant gun. The hammy had gone ping and the debutant was replaced by another debutant in Neil. The second half was a very open game with end to end action but not many goal scoring opportunities. Pip replaced Steve H and then Wardy, who had not managed to get too close to goals without his nose bleeding, had to go into goals to give Mikey a runout on the field for his first time for the Scotchies. The team continued to show the commitment for the full 90 minutes but unfortunately could not break the deadlock. And as the match ended in a goalless draw we all went to Pete Court to shake his hand and give him a big three cheers as he accepted the man of the match towel from Pip. Well done PC!

Final score: 0 - 0
