Match Report - Reserves 2009
RESERVES @ Mornington
Round 2 - 04/04/2009
RESERVES HELD IN OPENING ENCOUNTER AGAINST AN OLD FOE

Scotch's opponent for the second round of the season was a newly promoted old foe. Mornington had come off a great win against a relegated team in Endeavour last round, and for the Reds it was a chance to open their account for the first game of the season.

With a good mixture of familiar faces, the Reds took to the field with a strong team. However against the wind and battling uphill they soon realised they were going to face a daunting prospect against the Mornington outfit. In fact it was Mornington that had a better run of play, despite a new (but not necessarily young) defensive line in Cam, Bondy and Marinos manning well with Alfie sweeping. Disaster struck early in the half with the experienced Marinos rolling his ankle forcing Pip to bring on Dawsy for a well-earned run. With Marty as usual flying in for every tackle alongside Wardy in the holding midfield roles, it was up to Jimmy and Alex on the wings, Daz, and Pietro to pressure the Mornington defence. A Wardy skyrocket and a half-chance by Alex was all the Red's could muster.

Although there was some good linking counter-attacking play from our forwards, it was "Butterfly Stomach" Mike in goal who was called on to be decisive throughout the game by auditioning for Cirque de Soliel by throwing himself at everything that he could. And what his small stature couldn't save, the frame of the goal did.

At half time with the game still stalemated, Pip's quick pep talk reinforced the simple approach to the game.

The second half turned out to be a much more balanced affair. Attacks were more flowing, with Pietro consistently terrorising the sweeper with his pace and Jimmy stepping up his intensity to steam train levels, it was not going to be long before the deadlock was broken. Up the other end though, Mornington still had chances but it was a resilient defence as well as Mike deflecting every good opportunity to safety, or to the crossbar.

With Martin substituted for Pallis, it wasn't long before a through-ball was followed by an onside Pietro who, despite having a wayward second touch, recovered and belted a fireball at the almost untested keeper. The sizzler had too much heat for the gloved hoodlum who set it in the air as if waiting for someone to spike it over a volleyball net. Pity it was the wrong sport and the ball, along with the keeper bumbled comically into the back of the net. 1-nil to the Reds.

From there Mornington switched tactics to score an equaliser with their veteran sweeper playing higher on the pitch. Eventually, a Mornington free kick landed in the congested penalty area, pinging itself about like a pinball until it made its way into Mike's goal with only five minutes left. 1-all. With neither side able to muster any chances at the end, the game finished a draw.

While the Reds may be disappointed to not come away with the win against a respectable adversary, they can be pleased with the lack of cards and a well-spirited affair even with the extra dehydration of no water bottles in the second half! A quick look to the ladder shows that at only round two, no team has picked up full points showing promise that this season could as close as the game just played.
