Match Report - Reserves 2009
RESERVES @ Fitzroy City
Round 18 - 8/08/2009
DAY OF NOT MANY MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

Unlike the previous week's rain, this week when the lads turned up to Fitzroy City's ground it was bathed in glorious sunshine.  That was the type of sunshine that Alfie preferred to see and not the sunshine that came from Pete Court's "bike rack" as he was bending over to grab his boots out of his bag in the sardine can sheds.  Fitzroy City were a shambles with the nets only just going up as we started to get changed and that type of attitude continued as the day wore on.  They only had 8 players on the park minutes before the game but managed to scrounge 11 by the first whistle as there was a Pensioner group walking passed and an Eat-a-holics class going passed on a bus.

The Scotchies started brilliantly and had a few opportunities early on.  Pallis and Doidgey were reinstated up front and missed the target a couple of times and we all thought it was going to be one of those days ... again.  But then the team just clicked and the domination created more chances and the chances began to be converted ... and converted ... and converted!  The midfield trio of Daz, Doc and Marty worked brilliantly together along with Steve Hodges and Cam along the wings.  Marty started pulling all the strings and the first half became the Marty "The Monster" show.  He knocked in a cross to Pallis who calmly volleyed it in for a 1-0 lead after 15 mins.  A run down the right wing 5 mins later from Marty ended with a cross for Pallis to head in at the near post for his and the Scotchies second.  Shortly after, a corner came back to Marty on the left and his deft chip to the far post was headed in by Alfie from a very narrow angle and passed an incompetent keeper who helped the ball over the line.  And before we knew it, Pallis played in a reverse ball to Marty to absolutely smash the offside trap (or maybe Fitzroy had just stopped running by now) and neatly finish beyond the keeper.  Something like 30 mins in and we were 4-0 up, we were absolutely staggered!

The back 3 of Alfie at sweeper and Doug and Will in front of him had very little to do all half.  El Presidente Wardy had managed to get a guernsey in between the posts this week and he must have been thinking of the fall of the Arsenal empire when one of the Fitzroy strikers managed to get one back just before the half time whistle.  All he could say was, "Why did you leave Kolo Toure?"  We couldn't be bothered jamming in to the 2 by 2 shed and had the half time chat on the park.  Pip was flabbergasted and didn't have too much to say - what could he!

Fitzroy came out to play in the second half and dominated for the first 10 mins.  However, then it was the turn of Razzle Dazzle Haydon to pull out the party tricks.  A run passed 3 or 4 static defenders and a pull back to Pallis for him to find the back of the net and get his hat-trick.  Moments later and a long range shot from Razzle Dazzle was brought down by Pallis to turn and finish at his second attempt for a personal tally of 4 and the team's 6th.  Pip then made some changes with PC replacing Steve H with Doug pushing out wide and Marinos coming on to replace Pallis up front.

The changes didn't upset the shape of the team this week and actually spurred the boys on and the goals kept on coming.  Doidgey, after a dozen shots off target, finally managed to get one on target by tapping one in from 2 yards out after the keeper had partially blocked a shot!  Marty then got his second and the goal of the game with a run through the middle of the park and blast in to the top corner.   And moments later he had an opportunity to get his hat-trick but his speculative scissor-kick unfortunately went across the face of goal.

As the Scotchies all pressed forward to get a goal Fitzroy somehow managed to get only their second meaningful shot on goal and passed Wardy, who was complaining of no protection from his defence and mumbling something about why did Thierry Henry go to Barca, making the score 8-2.  Note:  El Presidente's two games in goal have resulted in the Reserves conceding 23.5% of goals so far this season.  When are you back Mikey??

Back down the other end and Doidgey cut in from the right, went passed a defender and slotted one in between the legs of the keeper for his second of the day.  Pip had made his way on by now to replace Cam for the last 10 mins and showed a turn of pace (or maybe the defender just didn't care anymore and stopped) and knocked one in to the far post for Dougie to neatly slot our tenth goal home in the final few minutes.

An absolutely amazing afternoon to boost the "Goals For" tally and everyone's confidence for the run home to the end of the season.

Final Score: 10 - 2
(P Pallis 4, J Doidge 2, M Pinnell 2, A Alford, D Baillie)
