DAY OF MISSED OPPORTUNITIES
The Ressies match started in a deluge of rain, which has been a rare occurrence at HA Smith on match days in recent years. The rain seemed to somehow surprisingly bring a Japanese shipping vessel down the creek under the freeway. We thought it may have been for our boy Pip, who had started himself at sweeper, but when we looked down the other end of the park the Old Camberwell sweeper was in definite need of a harpooning. He made our Pip look like Kate Moss during one of her cocaine fuelled diets!
The starting line-up had Pip at sweeper with Will and Doidgey in front of him and Wardy providing the midfield protection. Steve H and Alex on the flanks with Alfie and Doc supporting Greavesy and Marinos up front. Mikey was as resolute as ever in goals and provided a truly "world class" save in the first half and I don't mean that lightly. With a rasping shot dipping into his top left hand corner he managed to fly miraculously through the air and get his right hand across just in the nick of time. No one from OC believed he could've pulled it off until he did it again midway through the second half. He was flying through the air like dough in the hands of a pizza maker.
The lads started a little shakily in the rain but slowly got on top as the first half wore on. A couple of wide through balls played out like the thousand we'd done at training on Thursday night. Except, unlike Thursday night where the strikers beat Giesh with monotonous regularity, this time the sharp crosses couldn't find their targets. The best chance of the half coming to Alfie whose toe poke on a high cross went flying over the bar.
In the sheds at half time and Pip asked for a minute to catch his breath. Luckily he was short of it otherwise his half time assessment may have been a bit harsher on not converting our dominance to goals. But the chat was positive and the lads went out with renewed vigour in hunt for the 3 points. Unfortunately, the opportunities came but on this day could not be converted. The best one falling to Alfie who had been sent through from the half way line on an ill fated attempt at an offside trap from the rather rotund OC sweeper. Alfie charged towards goal but his first touch put the ball onto his unfavoured right foot. With plenty of time and space to place his shot we all waited with baited breath for the bulging net. But somehow the keeper was fortunate enough to get a touch on the shot and the chance was lost.
On came Pallis and Pete Court to replace Alex and Doc and bring on a lot of experience, only some pace and increase the average age of the team by about 14 years! And the next clear cut opportunity fell to Pallis who had charged down a clearance, sidestepped a defender on the edge of the penalty area and slashed a shot at goal towards the motionless keeper. The ball arrowed towards the post ... but shaved it on the wrong side. The next great chance fell to Greavesy who had been working tirelessly all day. A cross came over from the right and he soared over the keeper and about 3 defenders to get his head on the ball only to see if drift past the far post. The ball just did not want to go in!
As we pushed the extra man forward with 5 mins to go in search of the winner cracks began to appear in our defence. A fortuitous OC forward got a lucky bounce in the penalty area and if that wasn't enough his cross across the box squirmed under Mikey to a guy on the back post, who tried his hardest to miss but managed to bundle the ball over the line. Not enough time for the Scotchies to mount a comeback but enough time for Mikey to come charging out of his penalty area and get absolutely pole axed by an OC attacker. The match ended with some argy bargy in the OC box at the whistle to show just how frustrated the lads were at not picking up a win, let alone a point.
Final score: 0 1
