Match Report - Reserves 2009
RESERVES @ Doveton
Round 16 - 25/07/2009
RESSIES SUCCUMB TO LATE EQUALISER

The Ressies were in good spirits in the sheds before the game against Doveton especially because the pitch looked good enough to play on. After promising the ref we wouldn't cut it up for the seniors, Scotch was out for revenge for the miserable defeat suffered at the Smith.

With a significant wind advantage, the Reds captured the majority of possession unlike any time this season. Doveton were finding it hard to penetrate the halfway line, let alone test Mike in goal who had his thermos tucked behind the goal post, full of java to keep him awake in the half. Led by a strong midfield triangle of Marty, Doc and Wardy, Scotch pressured the Doveton goal. Greavesy and Alex were doing their best and with good support play from wingers, Steve and Cam, it seemed it was only a matter of time. But the elusive goal didn't come in the half as the burly chap in between the sticks was seeing off all challenges. Doc in particularly had a cracking effort from a suburb away, just missing the top corner.

At the end of the half, with the score still deadlocked the Reds knew the chances would be harder to come by in the second half. Pip reiterated the notion to not be anxious of time in searching for the goal meanwhile the green goblins entered the rooms with a cacophony of bickering.

The going was a lot harder in the second term against the gale force. Doveton decided to pull the finger out an attempt to play, forcing Mike to put down his copy of News of the World. Alfie, Bondy and Doug were holding up as best they could on such a large pitch. But it was good counter-attacking pressure at times from the Reds to show they still meant business. When Marinos and Daz replaced Doc and Doug it was fate impressing on Doveton to concede a corner. From the Wardy kick, Alex chinned the ball from the keepers grasp and into the greater personal space of Daz who lifted a leg and smashed the ball into the top corner with his second touch of the game. One-nil up and the Reds were looking to hold on for a victory.

However, Doveton still pushed and poked at the Scotch goal. Corners were defended until one was found to be impossible to defend. That's right, the wind decided to blow a corner kick directly into the back side netting leaving everyone disbelieving, including the person who took it. The game eventually slipped away with an unfortunate draw being confirmed despite close chances by Pip, who struck the post, and Alex who shot too high.

Final Score: 1-all
Scorer: D Haydon
