GREAVESY SINKS WARRAGUL AGAIN
The bus from Warragul chugged in to HA Smith at about 12.20pm on Saturday afternoon and a bigger load of riff-raff you aint ever seen before - except with Monbulk maybe being a close second. The Gulls had nearly as far to travel as Pip does every week to a home match but managed to shade him due to an alleged crash in the tunnel. As usual we had the carousel of ins and outs - Bondy and Doc were out, Steve H was a late out, Alex went up, Marinos was in, The Fabulous Benson Bros and Chas were back and Pip was late!! There was no-one there to run the ship! The ref, who had possibly just got off a ship, somehow decided that the red and a bit of black of Warragul did not clash with the brilliant red of the Scotchies and as there wasn't an away strip on the bus it was game on.
We did manage to get ourselves sorted and started the match like a house on fire. Greavesy was raging up front, ably supported by Marinos and Pallis and Chas and Daz were pulling all the strings in the middle of the park. In fact, in the first half Chas was everywhere like a pair of moccasins at a Warragul Blue Light Disco and we were all over them like a rash at one of their local clinics! With the Scotch dominance for the first 30 mins it was evident that third from top was playing third from bottom. This culminated in a stunning move after 10 mins involving Chas and Doidgey, with Doidgey whipping in the ball to the near post for Greavesy to finish with a crisp half volley. Greavesy was back and now scored two in two after a number of weeks out injured and shagging in Bali!
Another glorious run from Chas on the left ended with a chip to the far post and Greavesy coming in like a steam train to get a biscuit tin header on it and send the ball flying over the bar and over the fence. Further domination in the first half ended with a couple of long range shots from Pallis and not the second goal that we were after. At the other end of the park Mikey had little to do but make cups of tea as he was supported by Alfie, "Good" Will Benson, Wardy and Cam. The chat in the sheds was positive and Pip sent us out with renewed confidence after allowing Warragul to slowly get their way back into the game towards the end of the first half. Daz and Pallis did get a spray though for losing the ball in our defensive third - how those words were to haunt the gaffer.
The lads from Warragul did come out with some renewed vigour in the second half. They were throwing in some hefty challenges and after previously cleaning up Doidgey with a crude tackle one of their strikers took aim at Mikey in a one-on-one. The Rock of Gibraltar came out, got the ball and the striker but landed heavily. After another cup of tea Mikey was up and back in between the sticks. After an hour Pip made a couple of changes and introduced Tommy "Gun" Benson, to re-unite the Fabulous Benson Bros, and Jarrod. Wardy and Chas taking a rest to have their turn on getting some splinters on the first team bench. The rest of the second half was a see-sawing event with not many goal scoring opportunities.
A late change with Pip replacing Pallis for the last 20 mins to tighten up the defence and bring a bit of stability in the midfield, as per his instructions at the break of not losing the ball in our defensive third. And wouldn't you guess, first touch, dribbling across the top of the box, forgetting about his three touch policy and he's gone! Second touch, trying to slow the game down and he's gone again! Fortunately he wasn't on the bench to give himself a spray. Maz went down with cramp in the last 10 mins and we had to dig deep for the last few minutes but in the end it was a comfortable 3 points to the Scotchies. A surprising loss to table topping Monash Uni leaves us 5 points behind in third and with everything to play for.
Final score: 1-0
