COASH INSPIRES FULL CLUB PERFORMANCE

"This is a must win game!" Pip blurted out menacingly in the sheds before the fixture against Old Melbourne (OM). Most of us crowded around in the sardine tin also known as the change rooms were thinking the same thing: Pip isn't a coach, he's a superhero - Captain Obvious.

With the current slump in form for the Ressies, it was a tough task to beat a team we have never beaten before. All three previous occasions have ended in draws. And it was even harder when Pip showed the players the starting line up. "There's ten people on the board, Pip," Alfie, the captain, pointed out. A tall order indeed! It felt like we could've fielded a reduced team given the situation only hours before the game. With Aaron out and Tommy Benson going AWOL from injury (luckily leaving his brother behind), Pip got on the Bat-phone and drew from the resourceful Reds pool. It wasn't only the Ressies operating on thin ice. The Seniors had to pull Bondy out and eventually Doc.

Playing on the hallowed and massive turf that is the Scotch College pitch, the game was to be won through aggression and excellent passing. Despite our warm up being less than impressive, once the game started, our passing rhythm was on song. With Alfie sweeping and having plenty of space in defence to push the play deep in the OM half, the intensity on the ball was again high. Wardy, Chas and Daz were delivering well into the paths of Jimmy out on the left and Wes on the right. Pallis meanwhile had the opportunity to resume conflict against the beefy OM whinger. And although Mikey had to dart around the box to save oncoming balls, it was Doc and Will Benson who nullified the OM strikers in a way that made PC cry tears of approval. A promising sign was Scotch having more shots at the OM's goal in the first half than they've had in entire games.

But it was a Wes corner that produced the first flashpoint of the game. The ball bounced back into his path, causing him to swing a shot/cross into the OM box which skimmed off a defender's head and into the top corner that granted him a first and deserving goal for the club and the lead in the game. It was a pity that just before half time, Alf uncharacteristically lost the ball into a rushing OM player who struck it true past Mike for an equaliser.

Into the sheds again and Pip although content with the newfound aggression knew that another draw looked to be on the cards unless something drastic was to occur. Enter "Pistol" Pete Pallis.

"Revenge is a dish best served cold," is an old Klingon proverb quoted in Kill Bill. Pallis hasn't seen it or Star Trek. While the ref enjoyed taking control of the game in his own fashion, booking both Alex and Pallis, and with Doc and Wardy making way for PC and Tiddy, the Ressies were finding out what desperation play is truly like. It was end-to-end football as Pip made his appearance on the park. With the OM defensive line pleading for protection from a rampaging Pallis, the coup de grace came from a lofted Alfie free kick into the box and the oncoming steam train of Pallis, breaking the offside trap and slipping his foot onto the ball and under the goalkeeper. 2 - 1 and Pallis let it rub deep into the OMs wounds. From there it was an all out defensive effort until the final whistle when the Ressies could celebrate and savour a famous victory.

It was an even greater day for some after the game. Alfie was able to vent his spleen, Daz got rich from a Pallis yellow card, and Pip was taught how to count from Mikey (probably should get a second tutor - perhaps Jarrod up in Wollongong?). A special mention must go out to the Red's regulars, Chas, Will and Tiddy, for showing the depth of talent this club has and that they deserve to be in the mix for a Saturday call up with the stellar roles they played in the win.

Final score: 2 - 1
(Wesley Blaquiere, Peter Pallis)
