BITTERSWEET FEELING AT HALFWAY POINT OF SEASON
It was a big match for the Ressies. Last year's champions, Monash Uni (MU), came to H.A. Smith to keep up with Old Melbourne's hopes of taking the title. Meanwhile Scotch was attempting to get their title aspirations back on track after the disaster of the Monbulk curse.
With Mike back in goal, and an extremely strong bench complete with a belated arrival of Doc, the team received a pep talk from Old Man Alf before the game to fire the Ressies into the challenge that awaited. And with a new line-up whose most notable changes included Marty out on the wing and Alf playing an attacking midfield role, the game looked promising.
From the start the pace was frantic. Scotch's midfield including Wardy and Daz were battling hard against their MU counterparts. Our defence in Bondy, PC, Jimmy and Cam were giving the MU strikers nothing to play with. It was exactly the same up the other end of the pitch. Later in the half, MU was able to prise a couple of corners that were dealt with. Only Alex and Daz were able to have shots at goal in the first half.
Beamer said what everyone was thinking at half time. This team were not a team that should be feared. The game was surely winnable and it looked like a one-goal-game. Something had to give in the second half.
The intensity didn't let up. No team would give an inch to the other. After 10 minutes into the half, Beamer subbed Alex, Cam and Marty for Tom Benson, Marinos and Doc respectively. Just as Tommy was causing havoc down the vulnerable left wing, a MU attack resulted in Mike palming the ball to the bye line thinking that he'd done enough to secure the Scotch goal. However, a pesky MU striker latched onto the parry and only with the help of an ethereal being did the cross/lob hit the far post and bounce its way into the near side netting. A freak, undeserved goal.
It was only minutes later when another MU attack resulted in a point-blank goal, and Scotch knew the game was out of their hands. Heads dropped a little as well they should. But to the team's credit, they still plugged away and tied to create chances to salvage some respect.
When the final whistle blew, it was a bittersweet feeling. More bitter because of the defeat and the ramifications it has on the table at the halfway point of the season. Sweet because Scotch now know that no reserves team can stand out and claim a stake for the championship. A similar feeling was mirrored after the senior's game. Compared to last week the performance was out of sight, despite how similar the results were.
