REDS GET SEASON GOING WITH FIRST VICTORY
After some discussion and an encouraging training session on Thursday, the Reds took to the field on Sunday with a new formation, 4-4-2. The new look Reds were in positive mood as we knew that our opposition for this week, Melbourne Uni Rangers (MUR) would be tough but very beatable!
The game started and it was same old Scotch for the first 10-15 mins as we battled to gain control of the ball. MUR on the other hand settled early and were playing pretty little triangles between themselves, and straight through our midfield. We were however able to starve them of many chances, with our new flat back four working hard, perhaps too hard some might say!! But the pressure intensified and it wasn't long into the game before MUR found the opener, a run from one of their midfielders out wide and crossed low and straight across the box missing everyone except from one of their players to knock home an easy chance! Terrible defending from the Reds, and 1-0 down with a mountain to climb!
But, as is our mentality this season, a quick slap in the face with a wet fish saw us muscle our way back into the game. The two boys up front, Rob and Ali were pressing well, allowing Chas and Jarrod to run free down the wings, winning a few corners. And it wasn't long before we equalized. A corner was won, allowing some of our taller lads to venture forward. The ball was swung in to the front post drawing about 5 players too it, one being Jon who whilst taking an elbow to the head managed to control the ball with his back, onto his heel and into the path of Chas who fired home past their bearded keeper (I don't remember this happening but this is how Chas described it to me and I believe him). 1-1.
A few more chances in the second half for both sides including a clear penalty shout for a foul of Jarrod was given as a free kick outside the box, and the now mandatory exit of Neil to the hospital for dislocating his shoulder finished off the first half.
As with most weeks we came knowing that we had to take the game by the scruff of the neck to win it, and with the famous HA Smith hill now in our favour for the next 45 mins we started to do just that. We ran the show for the next 15 mins, and scored two more goals. One from a long throw in from Rob that an unfortunate defender headed over his own keeper and into their net. And the other from a long shot from outside the box that took an amazing bounce off of the pitch and over the perfectly placed keeper and into the back of the goal. 3-1 up and coasting.
It would have been too easy for us to hit a few more goals in for fun of it and claim a run away victory, so we decided to give MUR a get out of jail free card and gift rap them two more goals. Their attackers were playing the counter attacking game very well and it paid off as they drew fouls from our defenders which resulted in a couple of tap ins from a crowded scotch box. 3-3 with just 5 minutes to play and the Reds were in despair at the realisation that it may be another week before getting our seasons first 3 points. But before speaking too soon, we knicked it with a brilliantly taken goal from Alex, who had come on for the second and chipped the ball over the advancing goalie from a deep cross. 4-3 with just a couple of minutes to play and the win was ours!!
A well deserved win, and hopefully a catalyst for the rest of the season.
Thanks goes out to the two lads, Jonesy and Jeremy who helped out in goal well done lads. And, to the boys from the seniors who showed to support on the touchline.
