REDS v Old Melbournians
Round 6 -31/05/2009
REDS RUE CHANCES AGAINST OLD FOE

The Reds squad went into Sundays match up with Old Melbournians with high hopes that we could finally break our duck for the season and grab our first victory! With probably the strongest team the Reds have been able to field so far this season, but with a few sore heads thrown in from the team FA Cup night, we took to the pitch with anticipation.  Only a win would do for a team that so far hasn't been able to fulfill it's potential.

Though Tiddy's team talk highlighted the need to start off brightly, we couldn't get going, giving the opposition some early possession. No matter how we've tried to stack our midfield this year, oppositions have managed to find holes, putting pressure on our back line.  We have however managed to sure up our defense somewhat over recent weeks, with Ian, Crooky and Jon standing strong, enabling them to stand the test of two bullish centre forwards that were chasing everything down and pushing for the opening goal.  And, after a few early scares, Old Melbournians finally managed to do just that and break the deadlock, from a set piece (our poison of choice at present) that looped over the towering Stef and was finished neatly at the back post by their right winger.  An early blow that the Reds weren't expecting!!

But, to our credit, this managed to wake the home side up, and from the re-start the Reds began to show some assertiveness.  With our attacking wing backs in both Al C and Jez acting as our antidote, we started to move the ball out wide. Jarrod and Chas were putting in the effort all over the pitch from midfield and it wasn't long before we were going to create a chance for one of our new strikers in Rob and Aaron.  But as a surprise to everybody it was Ian that managed to find some penetration with a long clearance up field that sent Rob on his way.  He struck the ball well, only to watch the ball bounce off the cross bar and away from the danger area.

The Reds kept battling with some great tackling (especially from the smallest man on the pitch Chas) but without creating too many more chances, and after seeing out a few Old Melbournian digs at goal, the first half finished with the visitors ahead.

After a few f-bombs from Tiddy at half time we started the second half in exactly the same way we started the first!  Every pass seemed to pick out a player in White, rather than Red and it was soon 'backs against the wall'.  We had no answers and if it wasn't for Stef, who is now starting to find his feet in goal, the game could have been over soon after the break.  That, and a disallowed goal by the visitors which the Ref, for all his flaws, did manage to cause an amusing scene by motioning that the goal was to stand, only to change his decision and act as if he had done nothing wrong!  Nice work from the curly haired, Pierluigi Collina look-a-like!

Stef continued to keep us in the game with a couple of fine double saves.  Old Melbournians had another goal disallowed, as the striker was accused to be offside by their own Linesman.  It was the right decision, but one that sparked a comical spat between the pair which ended with the player being substituted, only to the amusement of the Reds faithful.  The last 20 minutes of the game became slightly more open, and at one point it was end to end stuff.  Scotch still trying the find the one opportunity that could have salvaged a point!  And, then it happened… Jarrod, feeling slightly lighter from losing most of his money to Jon the night before at snooker, found some room on the right to run into.  Powering through the middle of the pitch he delivered an inch perfect ball to slot Rob through on a one-on-one with the advancing keeper.  This was it, we were going to equalize!!  What happened next was the unexpected. Anyone that has played with Rob would back him in this position, and if he had the chance to do it all again, I'm sure he would have put it away with his eyes closed.  But he took the shot early and missed the target.  It wasn't meant to be and the game faded to a close and a fourth defeat of the season for Old Scotch.

We now have a two week break from the season and time to reflect.  Our problem right now is that we think we are good enough to be higher up the table, but in reality, at this moment in time, we aren't!  And we now find ourselves in the daunting position of an early relegation battle!  We need to stop expecting to win games and channel some of that desperation into doing what is right on the pitch, sticking together and sticking the ball in the bag of the net!  That's the only way to win games as no team in this league is going to hand us an easy three points!!

So recharge your batteries over the next few weeks lads and 'LETS BE HAVING YOU!!'
