Match Report - Reds 2009
REDS @ South Yarra
Round 5 -24/05/2009
SCOTCH REDS FEEL THE AWAY DAY BLUES

The Reds were off to play third placed South Yarra, completing a run of playing all four teams currently heading the South-East Division Two league. It's been a testing start to the campaign so far, with two drumming follow by two hard fought draws. A win was crucial to get Scotchy away from the bottom of the table. Chances of such a result were dented servely as news came through of various players pulling out due to injury or .....home work....! The squad so thinly spread already in the season is a major concern but such thoughts were cast aside for the day.

The Reds, as in each of their pervious games, started fairly well. Although Yarra had more possession no serious threats on goal were created. John deputising as sweeper was particularly strong in defence, backed up by the impressive Ian and the man mountain know as Crooky. As the Reds started to get a foot on the ball, chances were beginning to flow. Chaz's pace and Alex's power up front were causing the aging and somewhat overweight defence all sorts of problems. A few corners ensued with no end product until a clumsy hand ball/challenge by a Yarra player in the box meant a Scotch pen! Jarrod asked for the ball, only to be overturned by John who strode up the pitch with all the confidence of Clint Eastwood in a bar fight. Oh how looks can be deceiving as he struck the ball straight down the middle and off the keepers legs for another corner. Will came close with a strong header from the resulting corner but no luck.

The second half saw a change of keeper from Scotch which also proved pivotal. Scotch have conceded most of their goals in that 25 min opening period of the second half and so it proved again to be their downfall. A hopeful ball into the 18 yard box from a free kick was mishandled by Tiddy and the ball toppled into the Scotch net. 1-0 down when the reverse should have been true was painful to take. Scotch pressed with Jarrod miss firing the best of the opportunities. Jeremy and Dawsy ran tirelessly to find the equaliser but in the end nothing prevailed. Scotch were indeed lucky not to concede a second and we continued to through men forward. A permanent keeper and a true striker are desperately needed. Recruiting Rob in the June transfer window could be an option????? Next week is the biggest game so far for the Red's against fellow strugglers Old Melbourne.....a 6 pointer already!
