REDS GET THEIR BALANCE BACK BUT NOT THEIR RESOLVE
After a woeful start to the '09 campaign, the Reds finally gained their first point of the season this week.
During the opening few games, the Reds have scored about as frequently as Jarrod in a night club (not often) yet they've managed to concede a monumental 13. This (Australian sized budget) deficit has led to a crisis in confidence and fear of up-coming opposition. The main concern (in this reporter's humble opinion) has been the lack of balance and concentration in the team. This week, away to Old Camberwell, saw a slight rectification of this problem. The return of the cool and (sometimes!) calm head of Tiddy in defence was a huge boost. His organisation and ball playing skills gave the whole team that confidence to want the ball at their feet and pick out the simple passes. The balance also looked better; Tiddy sweeping the back, Will and Jeremy doing the horse work of the midfield, Chaz set free in a drifting role and two strikers (one quick, one powerful) complementing each other up front, the Reds got the start they needed. Four one up at half time was a fair reflection of a half that saw two goals from Rob, a stunning header from Jeremy and crafty twist and shot by Chaz. Jonsey in goal for the first time also gave a great account of himself. Talk was good throughout the pitch, the passing was simple yet effect, the work rate was up and, for but one moments loss of concentration, Camberwell would have been out of the game.
What has dogged this Scotch team so far this season is that this sort of effort has not been kept up for long, and as the second half began, this again proved to be the case. It seems that old habits really do die hard. The slope now against us, Camberwell took impetus from some slack passing and marking by the Reds. The communication of 'who was on who' and 'giving an option' all but disappeared. This was compounded by an unstoppable headed goal from a Camberwell giant, an unfortunate lob and a goalkeeping slip to bring the score all square. It was not until the last 15 mins that Scotch rallied again to their first half form and were unlucky not to snatch a winner. All in all, a much better performance and one that we can build. However, everyone needs to take account of themselves and put in a hundred per cent for the entire match if we are to progress out of a relegation battle this season.
