Match Report - Reds 2009
REDS @ Melbourne Uni
Round 16 - 23/08/2009
FUN DAY OUT AT THE BEACH FOR RAMPANT SCOTCH

Scotch turned up to Princess Park in a buoyant mood and full of confidence that the job could be done.  That confidence soon turned to confusion though when the reds weren't informed to bring their bucket and spade because they would be playing on enough sand to build some sand Castles! The beach like conditions added with the gale force wind that was blowing promised to make it an interesting afternoon.

The reds decided that their tactics last week of playing into the breeze for 90 minutes wasn't the best option so thought it best to kick with the breeze in the first half whilst it was still blowing at 100kmph. With Captain Will off on the love boat and Tiddy at home looking after his new child (congratulations Tiddy) Jon was gaffer for the day (much to his ego's delight) and Golden boot himself was thrown the captain's arm band. Will may as well have been there though as yet another Australian and Scotch captain lost a toss and against the wind we went.

The game started off rather scrappy as both teams came to grips with the conditions but it was Melbourne Uni who settled first with the breeze at their back as scotch did some defending. Uni rarely threatened the goal though as Scotch started to find some rhythm and play some nice passing football to gain back some ascendancy in the encounter.

The central midfield of Aaran, Jarrod and Doc were controlling the game and despite being against the wind Scotch were pushing forward now with regularity, with Jeremy and Sean getting forward down the wings to create some havoc. Our defence remained solid and when called upon dealt with any potential problems with ease, and also a little arrogance at times, as Jon chipped an on rushing defender and skipped passed him much to the delight of the fans. Any efforts coming from Uni were from range and Nick never looked like being beaten after pulling of 1 or 2 great saves in a tricky breeze that had the ball going all over the shop.

On the half hour mark the deadlock was broken and it was the reds who took the lead. Jarrod received the ball in the middle from PC and spread it wide to an overlapping Doc who slotted a pass through to Aaran who turned, took two touches and placed the ball in the bottom left hand corner. 1 Nil Scotch. The reds didn't sit on their 1-0 lead and the rest of the half was end to end with Scotch having the better of the chances. A few last ditch tackles in their own 18 yard box saw Scotch snuff out any chances the Uni may have had Jarrod missed a chance to put the game to bed before the break after a delightful through ball from Ian set him through on goal, only to chip the advancing keeper, but unfortunately just over the bar as well!

The game was effectively dead as a contest 3 minutes into the second half as Aaran found the back off the net almost immediately after the restart for his second, and from here on in it was always going to be Scotch by how many. (I would talk more about this goal however I didn't see it as Chaz was giving us a run down on his injured ankle which went for some time and I missed the lead up play)

The rest of the half saw Nick getting rather bored in goal and calling for the ball so he could shoot, PC who was in fact a right back playing pretty much as a right winger and Reahan, a right winger, playing as a third striker such was the dominance of the reds when kicking with the breeze which was resembling the Fremantle Doctor by this stage.

The third goal came in almost comical fashion as a through ball carried too far with the breeze, only for their keeper to fumble the ball off his shoulder and back into the path of Golden Boot who chipped it over him and into the back of the net for yet another goal this season. Al C drilled the ball home at the far post to add a 4th and finish off the rout in a game that could have easily been 10 nil had the reds not been so wasteful in front of goal in the second half. Nonetheless another good victory and 3 more points for the ever improving reds.

Final score: 4-0
Scorers: Aaran Carey (2), Rob Gillies, Allan Clarke
