REDS SEE OFF CAPTAIN BUT NOT OPPOSITION
It all started the night before with our captain making some selective phone calls. "You do know the game is at 11AM?" Yes, we know, have you just realised this yourself? Followed up by a 10:30 arrival claiming that the ground was not in the melways. The early morning was not welcoming for anyone with gale force winds whipping over Port Melbourne, with the rain yet to arrive. The goals were being shifted by our opposition on arrival, obviously to take full advantage of the wind, as they placed them under the shadow of the towering containers stacked up at the north end of the ground. The corner flag closest to us, as we sat warmly in the shelter, never came to a resting position as the wind threatened to blow the roof off the building.
Players started to arrive, having eventually found their way. Somehow Tiddy got lost somewhere between his car and the change room. I think his mind was on other things! No baby yet! El captaino showed off his new captains arm band. Apparently bought for him by someone else, but we all know the truth. Yes Will, you are our only true captain.
The reds had been decimated by injuries over the last few games, leading into this crucial game of trying to obtain the 4th position on the table by the end of the season. 4 players from the Royals had been elevations to make up the numbers. Daniel and Reahan, who had fought alongside us previously, along with Costa and Sean, making their well earned debuts.
The team was focused in the change room, coming off two hard fought wins and looking to place ourselves higher on the table. OM where on the same points as us, with only goal difference keeping them above us on the table. We considered ourselves unlucky to go down 1-0 last time and we were ready to show them that we are the most improved side of the competition.
The pitch looked really good for the amount of rain that had fallen over night. The cricket pitch in the middle though was like glass. There was no hope of changing direction on it, sometimes is was just hard to stand on it. Our mighty captain once again lost the toss and we were kicking into the wind. Despite that we started the stronger with Aaran running hard through the mid field creating chances. The wind started playing to the advantage of OM, as they took control feeding the ball into the forwards. There was limited activity down the left side as the wind pushed it to the other side of the field. It was almost impossible to kick the ball out on that side, as several times the ball was cleared into the air and going out, for it to come straight back into play. The focus quickly shifted to our support staff and bench on the side line. They bravely risked their own safety by moving a plexiglass cover, which had already been blow up against a picket fence into place so they could stand behind and watch the game. Brave souls they were. We applaud you! Tiddy did venture out on a regular basis to rally the troops, but Jon stayed dry at all times. I'm sure he felt like he was looking into a fish bowl as we ran around in the rain. It did magnify his head somewhat!
The game continued with OM attacking and Nick H in goal stopping everything that came his way. The good guys eventually came unstuck as we pushed forward, but an errant pass in the middle of the ground fell to OM. They ran at our defence with their number 8 eventually getting the ball at his feet and slotting it past Nick in goals. Such a shame to concede from something so simple after all the hard work to keep them out.
Then came the rain. The gods of OSSC where obviously disappointed and shared their discontent with all players and officials. By not Jon, who was dry behind cover. As everyone who played on Saturday looked out the window and worried about their patio furniture flying away, the reds dug in for a fight against the weather. Half time was approaching, but OM hadn't finished with the advantage of the wind behind them. A mirror image of the first goal with mistakes in the middle of the park costing us dearly.
We were glad to see half time arrive as we had respite from the wind and rain. We felt confident going into the second half, believing that OM hadn't taken full advantage of the wind. However, after thawing out and preparing for the cold onslaught, we discovered that the wind direction had shifted to be more across the ground giving no one the advantage.
The battle raged back and forth, with no team being able to score. The good guys had the majority of possession and continually applied pressure. A few shots on target, but unfortunately straight at the keeper. Will, who was doing a great job in defence, identified their number 8 as the danger man and decided to take firm action. A great tackle from behind, nowhere near the ball, felled their goal scorer right on to his back. He was carried off the field and returned with a significant hobble. For the rest of the game he was unable to move freely and was heavily restricted in his attack. This allowed Scotch to push forward without fear of a counter attack and finally the good guys hit the score board. A great narrow angle shot from Aaron, away from their keeper. The Reds had their tails up and started to take the advantage. Pushing everyone forward to find the equaliser, leaving it 1 on 1 at the back. A few hairy moments as OM tried to score on the break away, but their number 8 having been hobbled earlier was proving ineffective.
The final whistle blew with the ball deep into attack. The entire team felt deflated and greatly disappointed. It was Will's last game for the year as he now goes off travelling and cavorting around the world. The battle is now on as to who will wear the captains arm band for the rest of the year. With only 3 games left in the season and facing the 3 bottom teams, we are looking for a strong and successful finish.
Final score: 2-1
Scorer: Aaron Carey
