Match Report - Reds 2009
REDS v South Yarra
Round 14 - 9/08/2009
ITS 3 ON THE TROT FOR RED HOT SCOTCH

As Old Scotch arrived at the newly claimed H A Smith Fortress by one Pete Jones, Spirits were high as we knew we would be starting the match with at least 11 men on the pitch this week. The Reds have had typically poor starts this season, but after a lacklustre and sloppy warm up, some confusions surrounding the kits, with both teams wearing red and no spare kit in sight, it was in fact the home side that came out firing.

A very lively start was rewarded 15 minutes in when a long ball from a Jon free kick went into the box, Aaron challenged in the air, the ball broke to Rob who turned on his defender and slotted past the keeper from 6 yards. 1-0 to the Scotch and the belief was there that the team sitting second to the summit could be beaten.

The Reds continued playing the better football, then, injury struck again. Jon went down with yet another injury and the changes had to be rung by the gaffer. South Yarra gained the ascendancy as the Reds settled in to their new positions in the much hyped 4-5-1 formation, which has seen them revive their season in the latter half. As Yarra started to play some neat passing football Scotch gained possession in the middle third of the pitch. The ball was passed to Aaron, who turned, threaded a pass out to wide to Jarrod. Big J ran to the bi-line before squaring to the top of the box to an unmarked Reahan, making his debut for the Reds, who curled a great effort into the far corner. 2-nil to Scotch and looking the goods.
The rest of the half was being played end to end with no side able to grab the control of the encounter, until a tussle on the outer wing between Jonesy and their right back resulted in a second yellow in as minutes for the feisty SY red head, who had clenched his fists at our own Pete Jones. A man down and 2 goals down, Jonesy strutted off as only Jonesy can do. The ref then went card happy and was handing out yellow cards willy-nilly. Thankfully it was South Yarra who were least pleased and were the ones receiving the majority of the cards. I believe a lot of the cards were later attributed to the fact that there was a large English contingent in the South Yarra side and their bottom lips were a little droopy due to the previous two nights of watching the Ashes demolition.

Half time then and Scotch went into the sheds in a buoyant mood, but weary of the last time they went in more than a goal to the good they had conceded 3 in the second half. So the job certainly wasn't done.
The most amazing thing to come out of the first half was that Neil was back and yet to go to hospital. Could he last another 45 minutes without having to greet the friendly nurses at the Alfred? Only time would tell.

The second half started much as the first had finished, very even but with neither team carving out any real chances. Reahan was winning everything in the air in the middle of the park and our defence was holding strong, with the fit again Neil and Will, who had a sore ankle and head from the previous day/evening respectively. As Berwick had failed to do to us the week before, Scotch failed to take control of the contest with their opposition down to 10 men, and it was the visitors who were starting to create some chances. With a lighting quick striker in the armory the odd chance was falling the way of South Yarra.

Que; the one and only Pete Jones. Scotch broke and a ball came in from the right (I think from Rob) cleared 3 defenders who forgot to attack the football and got through to Jonesy who was waiting at the back post. An awkward bounce did nothing to deter Jonesy, who nodded the ball past the diving keeper and into the back of the net. 3-0 to the Mighty Reds.

South Yarra to their credit didn't lie down and with 10 men came back at us hard. We were camped in our own half for much of the remainder of the match and with 15 minutes left to play the Reds conceded a corner. After a scrap at then loose ball, SY toe-poked one into the net and they were all of a sudden up and about. The Reds had some chances on the break to put the game to bed put couldn't find the final touch. South Yarra kept coming and created the odd half chance, but as time ticked away it was all just a formality. 3-1 to the Reds, and now 3 on the trot to steer clear of the drop zone.

Old Melbournians next week to hopefully make it 4 straight. And yes people, to the disappointment of the nurses at our very friendly Alfred hospital, Neil made it through the game without any problems!
A special thanks to the lads who stepped up from the 4ths. Well done to all of you.

Final Score:
Old Scotch Soccer Club 3 1 South Yarra.
(Rob Gillies, Reahan Martin, Pete Jones)
