TEN MEN SCOTCH ESCAPE TO VICTORY!
Berwick! Not the nicest place to go play football! The lads turned up early with some optimism after a 1-1 draw at the Smith earlier in the season, but soon realised that it was going to turn into a tough day at the office. Captain Will had forgotten his boots, which sparked a mad dash around Berwick to find a new pair, and after a little financial help from Chas he just made it back in time for the start of the match. The same couldn't be said for the rest of squad as even after Will's heroics, Scotch were going to have to play the entire game with just 10 men after a few late drop outs! Tiddy, Jarrod and Jarrod's dog (all unfit to play) had made the trip so at least we had a linesman, some encouragement from the bench and a team mascot!! But it was going to be a tall order to keep this one presentable as Berwick were lying third in the league and were by all accounts a strong outfit. But what was about to happen during the next 90 minutes would go down in Scotch history as one of the most courageous victories of all time! Both teams appeared out of the dressing rooms wearing Red. Not a great start, but thankfully the home teams agreed to change (as we only brought one kit with us) and the game got under way. Scotch were playing the only formation they could, a 4-4-1 with Nick between the sticks for the first time and Rob "the Goal Machine" Giles playing as a lone striker up front. Looking back, it probably took Berwick 20 mins to realise that we were playing with only ten men. They're focus seemed to be on other things, such as trying to look good in front of their handful of mates that were 'hooning it up' on the sideline, drinking beers and smoking fags. The strong wind coming across the ground was making it hard for everyone but it was the depleted Scotchies that were creating all the early chances. Everyone was playing well, and for each other, which was great to see and it was paying off. Aaron and Chas were being given loads of time and space in midfield, always a dangerous thing to do, and soon put Rob on his way to open the scoring, a great finish which gave the lads some belief that we could actually gets something out of this game!! Jez and Bruce were running tirelessly from left and right back respectfully. A great job by both to help support the now 'attacking' team of ten, with great over lapping options, that were followed by excellent tracking back runs that fulfilled their defensive duties too. Wes and Jonesy on the flanks were also putting it in for the team, defending when required and making intelligent runs up the pitch to take the pressure off the defense. Will & Jon at the back felt comfortable that they had the opposition strikers sewn up, helped by the calming influence of an experienced keeper sitting behind us. But before speaking too soon, Berwick hit some form, and from one decent attack scored an equaliser, which though slightly biased, was against the run of the play. Either way, it was 1-1 and looked to be turning into a different game. A wobble free restart from the 10 Reds enabled us to carry on from where we had left off and miraculously we took the lead again through another goal from Robbie G. I can't remember too much about this goal but I reckon it must have been good, so we'll leave it like that. It's becoming such an occurrence for Big Bob to knock them in these days, they all look the same from the other end of the pitch! Berwick were getting slightly frustrated by now, as they had now worked out that they were losing the a team with only ten players and the tackles started flying in. Another under par refereeing performance saw a lot of bad challenges go unpunished from both teams, and Jon picking up a yellow card for what can only be described as a gentle nudge! But everything that Berwick through at us was dealt with at ease, and it wasn't long before we poached a third before the break. Rob sent on his way by a neat pass, raced up the pitch and slotted it passed the approaching goal keeper, who wasn't happy at Jarrod's decision to play him on side. Touch and go, but the goal stood and the first half finished 3-1 to the Reds. Tiddy praised the team at half time. Something that hasn't happened much this season. He was right though, everything had gone better than planned and the lads were sticking together! Reminiscent of the old Michael Caine, half time speech at the end of Escape To Victory - "We can win this one lads!! Who's with me?" |

Once the Ref decided to return to the pitch, the game got under way, and it was backs against the wall. Berwick, now aware that they were losing to a weakened side were starting to build pressure. But the defense was standing strong, and Nick was having a blinder in goal. The time ticked on and they became more and more frustrated. Every given opportunity we tried to slow the game down, wasting valuable seconds. A few scuffles occurred but nothing to write home about. A formation change with 15 mins to go saw Rob and Jon change places due to an injury to the sweeper. Rob making his presence aware straight away with some powerful clearances and Jon making no real impact as a lone striker! Berwick forced a corner which resulted in a bizarre goal mouth scramble and a scrappy goal which ensured a frantic last few minutes. Nick noticed that someone on the sideline had a camera and made an impressive diving save for the scrap book to deny a late equaliser. Aaron had thrown in a Man of the Match performance and was still looking dangerous going forward. The final few minutes ticked away and the Reds had pulled off the unexpected!! 3-2 to the tired Scotchies, a score that the team performance had deserved for a great effort!!! Well done to all that played… South Yarra next week. Perhaps we should start with 10 against them too, or perhaps not!! Final Score: 3-2 (Rob Giles 3) JW |
