DOGGED WIN SEES REDS PULL CLEAR OF RELEGATION BATTLE
Scotch arrived at H.A Smith Reserve for their must win clash against fellow relegation threatened Old Camberwell Grammer in high spirits. After throwing away a 3 goal lead at the half in the reverse fixture early in the season Scotch were determined to prove that the infamous second half was just a hiccup, and the lads were looking confident. The only pre game worries came when Will arrived with red bull and no doz again in hand and the panic button was hit that we may well have be in for another Will Benson love in; a thought that had the lads ducking for cover.
After a strange speech from the referee in which he told us he had endured a hard weekend and would not be doing much running, and a request for a discount from his match fee by Jon, this weeks cocktail of drugs seemed to have the reverse effect on the captain from the previous, and it was an angry Will that took the pitch as he screamed and attempted to marshal his seemingly flat troops as Camberwell took the early ascendancy to put us on the back foot. The 4-5-1 formation that had worked so well on the desert plains of Doncaster struggled, as Camberwell tore us apart at will through the middle and down the flanks.
The talk and intensity started to pick up from the reds and just when it looked like we had got away with a poor start with no damage on the scoreboard, Camberwell scored from a corner to snatch the momentum right back. Another goal conceded from a set piece, the story of the reds' season to date. To Scotch's credit the heads didn't drop and if anything the lads rallied to fight out the end of the first half, and starve Camberwell of any real chances, those that did come were superbly dealt with by Steph in his best game in goal for the reds this season; and Jon in his return from injury cleared one off the line.
Half time then, and 1-0 to Camberwell. Still well in it and now with the much talked about H.A Smith slope in our favor confidence in the sheds at half time was up.
An early mistake in defence saw Camberwell almost score immediately from the kick off, but with another loud and angry spur on from our captain and this near miss it seemed to spark the boys into action. Now playing a 4-4-2 formation Scotch surged forward creating plenty of opportunities but lacking the final touch on a day where sloppy passing really let us down. After wave upon wave of attack, Jonesy pounced on a loose ball in the middle of the park, played it to Wes who slotted through a beautiful ball to the on running Jonesy who had over lapped down the left and he coolly slotted passed the keeper with his left boot. 1-1 and a celebration for Jonesy after a 2 year goal draught.
Will yelled a lot more and Scotch continued to push forward in search of the winner that would pull them clear of the relegation zone. The ref who refused to run missed at least 101 handballs, and also managed to pay an advantage after a foul in the box should have seen has have a penalty, Wes fired in a shot from 18 yards that went wide and the ref saw that as a good advantage. Interesting. Scotch's final touch continued to let them down and after dominating for half an hour doubts started to creep in as to whether the second would come as the lads started to get frustrated at themselves and camberwell seemed to be content with a point away from home. But then it came. With about 10 minutes left on the clock, Al C chased a seemingly hopeless ball into the left edge of the 18 yard box, the Camberwell defence failed to clear their lines and Al C hunted the ball down like a dog, after 2 rebounds off his legs and bundling over 3 Camberwell defenders Al bundled the ball into the back of the net, and gave one more defender a shove to boot.
2-1 Scotch and we never looked back. A couple of more half chances went begging to put the game totally beyond doubt, but in truth, Camberwell never looked like scoring again as the Scotch defence held strong. A few dirty challenges from Camberwell ensured some sore bodies for the Scotch boys, but a deserved win in the finish and a result that gives the reds some breathing space entering the business end of the season.
