Match Report - Reds 2009
REDS @ Old Juventus
Round 11 - 19/07/2009
5 GOAL TURN AROUND LEAVES REDS 1 SHORT

Scotch turned up at the desert plains of Doncaster on Sunday arvo with the sour taste of the 8-2 drumming by the same opposition earlier in the season still stagnant in everyone's mouth.  The pitch looked like a pigsty that had been hard baked and then rolled, with very little green carpet.  The few tufts of grass that had survived protruded like mole hills and glistened in the sun.  But the pitch did look fairly flat and obviously suited a team that were currently sitting at the top of the league and loved to play a passing game.  Well, pass it to their main striker (No.14) who had an uncanny knack of producing a moment of magic from any anywhere on the pitch!

A few late drop outs to the squad caused for a couple of emergency phone calls, and the Reds were just able to field 11 players with one sub to spare.  Unlike most games this season, the team started really brightly.  Old Juve giving us a lot of time on the ball, allowing us to create a few early chances, though nothing that really bothered their keeper.  Wes pushing on, deputising as a second striker was working out well, with the increasingly impressive Nick H backing him up from left back.  Jarrod was running up and down the flank relentlessly though his only real penetration coming from a quick spew that agonisingly missed his opposing players boot by a matter of inches.  Slightly distort a few choice words of encouragement from the Scotch bench and he regained his composure and got back into the game.  Ian had been given the task of marking No.14 from the kick off and seemed to be doing a good job of it, until the old timer hit trademark swivel shot from around 20 yards that lobbed the stranded Stef in goal and the deadlock was broken.  Not much of a celebration from the rest home team who had seen it all before a hundred times at least! 1-0.

The early set back didn't effect the team too much and the game carried on where it had left off with the boys enjoying some great possession and some decent chances.  But again, nothing that made their keeper look troubled.  Ian was starting to p1ss the No.14 off with his constant nigglings which resulted in two instances 1) a swipe at Ian's nose from the No.14's flailing arm 2) a second brilliant goal from the frustrated forward who had now scored 8 times against us this season!  2-0 at the half time whistle, and the Reds hit the changing rooms with much to talk about.

There were two main talking points during the break were, firstly, Will polished off his box of Nodo's and his second Red Bull of the game, proclaimed his love for the team and fluttered out of the dressing room with newly found wings.  And, Jon realised that they had beers for sale in the club house!  A result, and the boys had a chance!!

The second period started with Scotch being aided by the strong wind that had picked up a fair bit since the break.  Old Juve were looking tired and were giving us far too much space in the middle of the park. Chances started coming and it wasn't long before Rob latched onto to an inch perfect pass and slotted it away to make it 2-1 to the hosts. A celebration followed which included a kiss on the lips from Will and the lads were back in it and looking dangerous!  But as if by magic, and within a couple of minutes of the restart, Old Juve 'fed the horse' and the No.14 made no mistake in claiming his hat-trick and knocking the wind out of the Red sails.  3-1, and the 45 year was making it look easy!  Again!!

To our credit the boys kept probing.  With so much space in the middle of the field we were able to create chance after chance. Again, the ball being passed onto Rob for him to slot in his second goal with a trademark finish. 3-2.  The aging Juve back line not happy with Ian's decision to call Rob onside whilst deputising as the linesman, sparked an onslaught of abuse at both the Ref (who had by this time given up) and at Ian who seemed to enjoy every minute of it!  A few wan(ker signs and the game continued, with Scotch searching for an equalizer that by this time was well deserved.  Chas was put through one on one but the keeper made a great save.  Rob knocked one over the bar searching for a hat trick of his own.  It was looking desperate with the time running out.  Then, with an over lap on the left Wes managed to pick up the ball and run into the box, he unleashed a shot that beat the keeper but hit the far post and bounced invitingly for Jarrod who knocked the ball into the net.  The scores were level and the boys celebrated Booby Moore style, and there was another quick kiss on the lips from Will.  3-3 and the boys were confident that they had at least secured a point against the top of the league team!

The last few minutes dragged.  Jonesy managed to shoot one of their players in the neck.  Stef pulled off a winning reflex save that denied the No.14 another goal, and the Scotch survived a late penalty shout.  But, when Juve were awarded a free kick just right of the Scotch box, the ball was swung in and knocked goal-ward bound.  Stef managed to get a handle on it but palmed it to a Juve player who slotted home and the Italian Job was complete.  The final whistle went and game had been one in the last few seconds of the game.  4-3.  A demoralising result for the thirds who had played so well.

The dressing room was sombre after the game but it had been a much improved result from the 8-2 defeat a couple of months before and the team should take some heart that they almost caused an up set.

Next week, Old Camberwell at home should pose some different questions of the Thirds team, but if we can turn out another performance like this one, we should play them off the park and Will might wish to invest in a new chap stick!!

Well done lads for giving it a good go!!
