REDS 5 NIL HUMBLING AT HANDS OF NUNAWADING
Exactly 12 months ago the Scotch 3rds suffered a punishing 5-1 defeat to open their season's account. Fast forward a year and despite a newly formulated league system and a re-branded 'Scotch Reds' team, the old score line seemed all too familiar.
The Red's, as indicative of the entire club, have much improved their personnel this season and after a pre-season trophy in the bag, prospects looked good. The same, however, could not be said of the 'rapidly approaching winter' Melbourne weather. The Red's, with the wind at their backs, tried to capitalise early. The talk was good, the pressure constant and the passing (although cautious) found its man. All that was lacking in the opening 30mins was that all important, yet allusive, goal (both Stef and Jarrod coming agonisingly close). The mid-field duo of Chaz and Jon, one playing balls and the other winning them, was posing questions to the ever impressive Nunawading opposition. The deadlock came against the run of play, with a dubiously awarded free kick not being cleared, allowing a Nuna player to poke home.
The Second half started scrappily, with the ball being tossed around in the prevailing winds. The Reds had to reshape with the loss of their middle field paring. The effective wing play of Neil being nullified as he was forced to move inside. The second goal came again from a free kick and once again it was missed by all. Heads began to drop and errors became ever present. The minutes and three goals ensued each by costly mistakes. It was only at this point did the Red's begin to re-find their touch and passing, way too little and much too late.
A very disappointing start to the season but signs of promise (both as a team and individually, such as Steve in defence) was there. Going by last seasons results, there is no need for any panic or dramatic changes, although a new keeper (sorry Tiddy!) and some goals wouldn't go amiss.
0-5 the final score.
