11 OF THE BEST FROM THE 3RDS
The day began with the sun hiding behind the clouds, and the cold wind blowing across the somewhat soften Smith Reserve grounds. Throughout the lead up to the long awaited game, the Old Third players knew that a repeat of last year's season was totally out of the question. They all knew that the first game of the season would essentially set the tone for the rest of the year.
Come kick off time, all the Scotch players were some what surprised to see a 10 man Brighton team approach 'The Fortress'. Already hungry for both the football and goals, it didn't take Scotch long to register the first goal of the game. Will slipped in behind the ever aging Brighton defence to slot the first goal of the game and season. The rest of the half saw Scotch comprehensively dominating the midfield and attack, with pressing runs through both the flanks. Allan single handily gave the Brighton defenders cardiac arrest with his probing runs down the left flank, whilst Ben and Jai Ho plagued the remainder of the team with their constant overlapping and damaging through balls. But the highlight of the half was by far Terry's lob/cross/pass/shot which ended up conveniently behind the net from 20 metres out after a Scotch corner. 3-0 to the Good guys at half time.
When the boys came in for the half time huddle, we knew the game was there to be won; the only question that remained was by how much would we win? The second half saw the opening of the flood gates. As Scotch continued to dominate the midfield through the presence of Adam, Ali and Paris, the team grew in confidence and found itself passing and transferring the play willingly through the middle and the flanks. The half saw a total of 8 goals being scored, with the highlight being Adam's crack at goal in the middle of the park which ended up going top right. This was closely matched by Allan's pile drive volley which nearly broke the newly bought nets. The final score ended up being 11-0, and whilst it remained a good practice for the Thirds and their goal shooting, the most important thing to come out of the game was the message the boys sent to the rest of the comp - We're here to win
