SENIORS @ White Star Dandenong
Round 22 - 06/09/2008
SENIORS SLAUGHTER STARS IN THE LAST ROUND TO FINISH 5TH

Before I begin, good season lads! Under the circumstances (injuries & absences), 5th is a pretty good result. We lost some we shouldn't have, we won some people didn't expect us to (and in the process cost at least one club promotion). I would also like to thank all of you who have tuned in for 20 of the 22 weeks to read my meanderings musings. Now on to the job at hand!

We won, they were woeful for the 22nd time this season. If they continue with the playing roster they have had this year, I imagine they will be spending quality time with Ringwood in Metro Men's within 2 years. What amazes me is that they have failed to win a single game this season: I have never seen that happen… in the entire time I have been playing senior football!

The happiest man in Australia opened the account; Pietro scored 2 (coz 7 in 3 games, to just miss out on the golden boot seemed like a good idea), Dave scored, Jewy scored and the Doc pitched in with what looked suspiciously like an own goal, but was attributed to our Scottish connection despite my remonstrations.

That is enough about this, now for the reason I really sat down and decided to write a match report today: Captain Fantastic announced his retirement on Saturday. I am now going to attempt to say some nice things about him and you know how much of an effort that is for one so sarcastic, so bear with me.

It is difficult to say the right thing when the retirement of a guy that has meant so much to the club and its players over the years hits you (as was evidenced by the Doc's clumsy attempt to console Stu as the words got stuck in his throat - sorry Doc, but 2 cramps in one season mean you are now officially a target). Whilst, like others in the team, age and personal commitments (such as children) begin to make it difficult to commit to the club, losing a player like Stu leaves a big hole for the club to fill.

I can tell you from experience that you seldom come across captains that have the commitment and capability of someone like Fanta. He has been a constant throughout my time at the club and I know he has been a part of the club for a lot longer. It is worth, at this stage, pausing to note that not only did he provide leadership and guidance to us on and off the pitch, but also he won B&F last year (a premiership year), which, if nothing else, is evidence of the influence he has on a game.

He has supported us, yelled at us, calmed us down, laughed with us and put his hand on our shoulder when we needed it. On the pitch, he has shown the way through his attack at the ball, relentless pursuit of hapless squealing attackers and timely foot when the tackle had to be made. He has brought aggression when needed, fired rockets up us when we have been flat, argued with the coach, remonstrated with the refs, flattened a number of opposition players and he has earned our friendship and respect.

Good captains don't come along every day Stuart Robinson (trust me on this) - you were a good captain; and are a good bloke. Come back and see us from time to time, the game will be strange without you.

Thus endeth the match report…

6-1 the final score
