SENIORS @ Warragul Utd
Round 19 - 09/08/2008
SENIORS STRUGGLE AGAIN AS 180 MINS IN 2008 FAILED TO YIELD A SINGLE GOAL

It was early when Stevie woke; no later than 11am. He introduced himself to the young lady lying beside him and suggested she avail herself of the door as he had an important game in a few short hours and had to study the Melways to figure out how to get there. Upon discovering the Melways didn't reach as far as Warragul, he rang the Doc for directions and began to prepare…

Much like the rest of us, Stevie did get lost in Warragul whilst looking for the ground (probably serves him right for following Giesh), but, like everyone else he finally made it. Standing at the top of the hill, the pitch looked good. A lush, green cover on what appeared to be a flat pitch. But appearances my dear reader can be very deceiving.

After rappelling down the hill onto the ground, it was found to be a tacky pitch that was ready to hold up both ball and player. And as a bonus, it looked like it had been put through a blender, ensuring that there would be some stern tests of ability to control the ball.

The game started nice and lively. We won the toss. Bondy then set about organizing the defense, himself picking up a robust Warragul striker who was significantly out of his weight division and in serious danger of an on-field heart attack should he have to chase the pill with any vigour. With the wind at our backs and the orb of joy and pain at our feet, we set off forward in search of an onion bag in which to stick it.

And the opportunity came to us early on. The ball had found its' way to the foot of one of the faithful, only to see him drive it with intent into the breadbasket of the waiting keeper who duly allowed it bounce off his person.

With this fresh in our minds and looking to capitalize on early pressure, it was almost the bad guys that put one away. A long ball came forward; seeing the oncoming ball and imminent danger, our sprightly bag man came loping off his line with the kind of authority that can only be characterized by the way the opposing player got there first, wrong footed him, and sent the ball goalward. Fortunately for the Scotch faithful, Stevie had not removed his cape after his previous night's shenanigans and came sliding in to block the shot, sending it sailing out for a corner.

With the obligatory early scare out of the way, we set about building the pressure. The pill was finding its' way up to the attacking third with abandon and shots were whizzing (over the bar, past the uprights, into the defenders)…

One such instance saw young Marty launch his boot into a shot at the same time a defender decided to plant his size 12 into it as well. The result saw the young second-gamer coming off early with a twisted knee. This saw the injection of one Douglas Baillie into the game. A little bit of pace from the happiest man in Australia was never going to go astray.

Despite our inability to convert chances (and a ref who is a little shaky on the finer points of football - like handball), strong work in the midfield ensured that few opportunities would be forthcoming for the bad guys.

Again, the pressure began to show on the relegation threatened Warragul and Pi found himself behind their defense with only the loneliest player to beat. Unfortunately for the good guys, it was at this stage he chose to chip the advancing midget, forgetting the state of the pitch. As fate would have it (or maybe just physics), it was at that moment the nugget took a bobble and we could only watch on as it sailed over the crossbar. The remainder of the half saw similar fortunes come our way as Jewy blazed over the crossbar from good position within 5 minutes of Pi's effort and despite the lion's share of possession and a number of chances, we came into the shed at halftime even.

The second half shaped up early to be one that was dominated by the team with the wind (much as the first was) and the pill was finding its way into our defensive third with a little more regularity than anyone was comfortable with. It was not long until Warragul found their way through the Scotch defense but fortunately of their attackers chose to cannon a ball into our wheezing green guy's guts.

Danger over, but Giesh had barely managed to get his breath back before he was called on once again, this time a shot through traffic was parried by an outstretched Giesh. Our attack had begun to slow down, and whilst the midfield was doing its job, it was more defensive than their usual offensive.

With the force of will, with ball at feet, we managed to string some attacks together, pushing a desperate opposition backwards in search of the ever-elusive goal. Corners were earned and whilst we eventually did find the back of the net, the ref finally picked up a handball by Tommy and the nugget was handed over to the opposition for a free kick.

With relegation in their mind, the banjo boys looked for the extra energy they needed to steal the three points they so desperately needed. Whilst they managed to elude our normally steadfast defense on a couple more occasions, they were only able to send some tame shots towards goal, which were easily collected by the Giesh. Their last real opportunity saw their nippy little midfielder steal his way through the defense only to have a sliding Kiwi coming out to smother the shot.

The last opportunity of the game would have come to Jewy, but in his infinite wisdom, as opposed to allowing our striker to shoot from inside the 18, he decided to blow up a free kick for us and take it all the way back to the side line in another tremendous display of his grasp on the game.

All that being said, the opportunities were there for us and Warragul is a long way to go for no result. We need to think about the fact that we are just not putting them away this year and look to rectify that in the next few weeks. Let's finish this season off in style blokes!!

0-0 the final result
