EYE FOR AN EYE

The stage was set for the rematch of the season (so far), one of momentous proportions to kick the season off, with the Champions taking on the Runners up from Provisional League 2 at Ashburton Park.  Both Reserves and Seniors had strong squads going into the match, and with the hatred that it would appear the home side have for this grand club (jealousy is a curse), we knew what we'd have to be up for it to walk away with the points.  I don't think anyone had quite the idea of what was about to unfold during two hard fought 90 minute encounters.

As the sun came out, so did the supporters.  From far and wide, fans from England, Tasmania, even Pascoe Vale, turned up in their droves and other luxury 4WD to cheer Scotch on.  Some were jovial and some were just trying to cop a feel of the mood.

Todd & Pi entertained, whilst Will has a rest on the sideline.

Just to clarify, the refereeing will not be commented on in this match report, as it does not bear thought. Suffice it to say that whilst we are happy that the FFV are an equal opportunity employer, we are not so sure on their choice to use the visually impaired.

A stirring speech from the coach set the scene and the Scotch seniors strode confidently out onto the pitch to face their arch-rivals of the past two years, Ashburton.

After a short period of acclimatising themselves to the hustle and bustle of Provi 1, inroads started being made towards the Ashy goal, and before they had time to realise they were outclassed and outgunned, we were supplied us with a 'Jewy' special, cannoning a 1 on 1 opportunity into the legs of the opposition hand bandit, only for the rebound to strike his legs and trickle towards the goal. Fortunately, Trounga managed to toe it over the line, thus being attributed the goal that would have been a travesty to award to the aforementioned.

At 1 nil to the good guys, things took an unfortunate turn and an otherwise injury-free pre-season was about to be severely disrupted. First Trounga went down with a foot injury sustained during his scoring of the first goal, and then...

Ashy had run a series of passes down the right, and in one of their rare moments of football, a through ball from just outside the 18 yard box sent two of their players goal ward with a 60-40 chance of beating Giesh to the pill. As Giesh rushed off his line, in what was can only be described as an incredibly gutsy tackle, Doug slid in from nowhere to collect the ball (and everyone else) ensuring the Scotch goal remained intact. It also saw Doug come away with 3 fractures to his cheekbone.

At resumption of play, the mighty Scotch gave Ashy a lesson in finishing as the pill was quickly transferred to our attacking half and in a fit of excitement, The Mouse chose not to cross to Jewy (probably based on the fact that he had already missed a couple of sitters) and cracked one past the hapless Ashy goal keeper. 2 - 0 to the boys in red.

Somewhere during this period, the little cue ball defender from Ashy also copped a knock to the jatz crackers and whimpered his way to the sideline, ending his involvement in the match, but this wasn't particularly interesting, so we will move on.

The second half was less eventful than the first and consisted of thrust and counter-thrust by both teams. There were, of course, a couple more sitters that Jewy contrived to pass back to the opposing keeper, however, the gimps in green were kept at bay by an able defence which ensured that only one shot was taken on goal all day (which, in case anyone wondered, Giesh did get a fingertip on to send it crashing against the crossbar). A great result given this is the first time we have beaten Ashy away in the short history of our illustrious club.

As a post script, our thoughts are with Doug as he undergoes surgery to make himself that little bit better looking, as well as taking the opportunity to tend to his facial injuries. This win was for you mate.

NB: Further news on Doug is he will find out what, if any surgery is required on Wednesday.  Stay tuned...
