EYE FOR AN EYE
The stage was set for the rematch of the season (so far), one of momentous proportions to kick the season off, with the Champions taking on the Runners up from Provisional League 2 at Ashburton Park. Both Reserves and Seniors had strong squads going into the match, and with the hatred that it would appear the home side have for this grand club (jealousy is a curse), we knew what we'd have to be up for it to walk away with the points. I don't think anyone had quite the idea of what was about to unfold during two hard fought 90 minute encounters.
With nearly a full strength squad to choose from, the Reserves fancied themselves highly to take home the points against a previously strong Ashburton side. After finishing in the top 4 in 2007, Scotch knew Ashburton would provide a tough test first up and they needed to be at their best to ensure they got off to a win in season 2008.
The opening 10 minutes were fairly even, although there was cause for concern a couple of times when Ashburton broke into the Scotch penalty box. Scotch struggled with the set pieces, especially with the ball being played to the back post, two green opportunities going begging for the home side.
This woke the Reds up and they began to regain some composure and threaten themselves. Newboy Tom Murray was like a ferret in and around the Ashburton midfield, picking up loose balls and giving them off. Tall man Brad was winning headers in the air thanks mostly to his new lightweight haircut and slimmer frame.
Supply to the front two came and went and Scotch struggled to create too much in front of goal, with the exception of a Pallis one on one that the keeper smothered at his feet. Pallis picked up a yellow card in frustration as he threw himself about, along with a bit of lip to the man in black. A Scotch free kick had to be retaken after Pallis tried to take it quickly, not realising the 10 yards had been requested. Alfie curled his chance straight into the arms of the waiting Ashy hand-bandit.
It seemed Scotch were on top and controlling the game, when disaster struck in the form of Pallis' large orifice. After giving away one too many free kicks the referee was about to give Pete one last chance, but when the mouthy Maco fired off another tirade, the ref had no choice but to give Pallis his marching orders. Needless to say he didn't go quietly. The half time whistle went shortly afterwards and Scotch knew they had a mountain to climb but were confident of their chances.
After a moment to gather throughts and breath, the Reds came back out firing. Doidgy had to assume front-man responsibilities and chased hard from the second half KO. Within minutes Scotch had the lead they desired, with Tom picking up the loose ball just inside the Ashy half, thanks to some great pressure by Doidgy. Tom took on a couple of would-be players and turned to hiis favoured left foot, dispatching a fabulous shot past defender and the outstetched hapless keeper for a 1-0 lead that shocked both home crowd and the home side.
With Scotch 1-0 up they knew the intensity needed to be raised as Ashy had to come at them. Come they did, and with Pete C coming on for Las earlier, he had the job of curbing Ashy's #16 striker. A lost ball in midfield saw a quick counter attack and cross over to the back post. With Pete rushing to get acorss to close out the danger, the nimble little forward nipped in and lobbed a nice finish over the onrushing Mike for the equaliser, and for Mike's first conceded goal in regular compeition from open play.
The hard working Doidgy came off for Alex, Wardy then came off for Tibs and it was up to the Reds to hold out and try and create chances wherever possible. Patience was the key. Very few chances came to the Reds and with time running out a draw would be a great result. It wasn't to be as in the dying stages the Reds conceded their second and Jaryd received a straight red for him abusive tongue, following by the Pallis example set earlier in the day.
2-1 loss the final score, and with one round gone it is sure to be an expensive year for Pallis and Jaryd if they continue to practise oral suicide amongst the, albeit incompetent, yet intolerant referees. This will surely been seen as 3 points dropped, with ramifications sure to come from Coach Pip during the week.
