Pallis scores, Wardy equalises
After a week of much needed rain the lads were looking forward to getting out on the softened HA Smith pitch. Despite Pete Court, Ian and Roo being notable absentees from recent squads, it was still to be a strong squad for their match up against a club who competed in State 2 in season 2007.
After controlling the opening exchanges Scotch looked to capitalise on a weak Lalor defence. Tom worked well in midfield, creating plenty of opportunities for the front pairing of Doidgy and Pallis. Jaryd soon joined them down the right as the visitors sat deep. Despite countless offsides Scotch managed to pry open the Lalor backline with some good pressure. The ball fell nicely to Pallis from the hard working foot of Doidgy and with the keeper off his line Pallis was able to tuck away the opener. 1-0 to the Reds (playing in white).
Fromt there Scotch opened up a few more opportunities but couldn't find the killer ball or shot to double their lead. A few changes were made and Scotch began to lose their ascendancy. Lalor players were breaking free from midfield at will and causing the Scotch backline to haemorrhage. Talking was the cause and Scotch weren't the ones doing any of it with Lalor beginning to believe they were actually half decent. With a few missed tackles in the box, Scotch almost conceded with the Lalor #8 midfielder shooting just wide of debutant Adrian's right hand post. If this wake up call wasn't enough, the equaliser certainly would've woken a few up. With the defence stretched again, the Lalor defensive midfielder got forward down the right, and with Wardy back-peddling to cover, a half decent diagonal through ball was played out to the right wing. Wardy appeared to have it under control, until his right hoof half-volleyed clearance ended up coming off the side of his boot and spun nastily to bounce over the line from about 25 yards, much to the dismay of both Adrian and Wardy himself. More chances at the other end for Scotch to regain the lead came to nothing as more chances were wasted.
1-1 at half time and after a spray from the coaching staff Scotch knew they needed to lift their game. Scotch again had many chances and should have sewn this match up, if not before the break, certainly after. A couple of smart saves from the Lalor keeper kept the visitors in the game. Pallis had a much needed rest towards the end as many played in positions unknown to them to see what they could offer in many parts of the ground. All in all it was a good hit out for some of the new guys to the club, as well as a good wake up call to a few regulars, yet it will go down as one that should've been won comfortably given the number of chances and possession Scotch maintained.
SENIORS
Seniors cruise to comfortable 3-1 win
With a hint of Winter in the air, and the opening round of season 2008 just 7 days away, the Scotchies were keen to put in a solid performance in their final pre-season encounter. The opposition, Lalor Utd were the usual toothless gypsies from somewhere up north, but their superior league status meant that respect was due..
After the recent rain the pitch was easier on the ankles, but not on the ball skills, with the surface proving more challenging than the opposition. Both teams took time to settle, ably supported by a Court Jester posing as a referee in the middle. As the pitch began to cut up in the damp conditions, it looked like goals would come from defensive errors rather than attacking inspiration. The scotch defence had their hands full with the pacey striker but on rare occasions they skipped away from Doug or Bondy, Captain Fanta provided a timely intervention.
Meanwhile, at the other end, the Scotch attacking unit were starting to gel....some slick passing unlocked the Lalor defence leaving Truonga with enough time to polish his technicolour boots and then calmly slide in the opening goal. Protests followed from the tribal opposition, but as the referee didn't understand the offside rule in the first place, they fell on deaf ears. The remaining minutes of the first half played out with rare goal mouth action, Mikey pulling off an instinctive reaction save to keep the half time score at 1-0.
The second period brought some extended waves of pressure from the visitors, fully testing the discipline and organisation of the home side. John and Chris J provided a physical presence with some bone shaking tackles and fresh legs were brought off the bench in the form of Brad, Steve and Las. Again, just like Scooby Doo's young nephew...this game was scrappy! Hard work by Chris J on the right wing paid off as he cut back on his left foot and fired low past the outstretched keeper...2-0.
Both sides played out the rest of the game with one eye on the real business of the league next week....no point risking injuries at this stage. Nick Jewitt stole in for a 3rd scotch goal and the visitors were given a late gift with a goal mouth scramble eventually being smashed passed the otherwise excellent Mikey. Final score 3-1.
Undefeated in pre-season, bring on the real stuff!
