FOURTHS RUN OUT OF PUFF AS LATE DRAMA HITS HARTWELL RESERVE
The boys of the 4ths came to Riversdale FC hoping to pick up some points, but realistically aiming to limit the damage as they faced an outfit that was rampaging along at the top end of the table. As the boys ambled into the change rooms, it was soon clear that this was going to be a Sunday session to remember as rain poured down onto a pitch reminiscent of a mogul run at Hotham. The team were eager however, unlike the opposition who gingerly looked out at the clouds and rain from the warmth of their change rooms and promptly decided to hole up there until the ref blew the whistle to start the half.
As the match got under way the 4ths exerted a newfound confidence fresh from last weeks minor (a 1-0 defeat ain't half bad) success and the men from the 'dale were soon caught with their pants round their ankles as the 4ths found themselves dictating the tempo. A game plan was apparent for the first time this season, with Rolo knocking down headers to transfer coup Ali who would spray the ball out wide to Leonard or Bemelen with the wingers knocking crosses in for Pete. The defence was holding firm as well with Phil anchoring defence for the first time this season with aplomb. Soon enough a counter attack down the right led to a Leonard cross being tucked away by Pete to send the OSSC cheersquad of 2 into raptures and propelling Pete into contention for the South East Metro Golden Boot.
As the half wore on Scotch continued to forge chances as the midfield of Alexi, Hainsey and Magnet worked overtime, with Pete going close again, and Ali letting rip with a thunderbolt from 30 yards destined for the top corner but for the touch of the keeper's glove. But Riversdale themselves started to find a rhythm, and were unlucky not to be on level terms when a cross needing only the slightest of touches somehow eluded their striker. Yet despite their improvements, OSSC stayed firm at the back, with Shayne, Jules, Phil and Magnet refusing to let anything past.
As the ref blew for halftime, the boys entered the change rooms riding a wave of confidence, with OSSC looking good for the win, and the crowd entertained with football more suited to the EURO's than Hartwell Reserve.
However the signs were not good from the very beginning of the second half, with Rolo, acting as linesman, dismissed from his duties as he let the ref know what he thought of his decision to overrule him on a call. Whilst lucky not to be sent off, a trend was set as the boys started to lose their concentration and discipline, whilst Riversdale began to settle into a groove.
Chances were few and far between for most of the second half, before Riversdale earned a deserved equaliser 20 minutes from time. OSSC were no longer finding the space down the wings, and aside from a couple of corners, a lack of chances in the final third saw the pressure mount on our defence to hold firm. In the final 10 minutes fatigue reared its ugly head, as the 4ths again failed to finish a match. 2 goals in quick succession saw the game killed as a contest, before the Dale's striker added an unjust gloss to the victory with a contentious goal that left Matt with no chance in goals. Phil had moved to play him offside, which Leonard called as linesman, but the ref was having none of it, and put down the goal. The 4ths reacted with disbelief, with Leonard throwing in the towel as linesman and letting the ref know what he thought. The ref promptly flourished the red card, and Leonard left the field with a few parting shots at the ref.
The finish was a real disappointment for the boys, as the 1st half was by far the best football we had played all season. Had a few more chances been converted, it could have been game over at the break. But the fragile lead was not enough as the 4ths were simply overrun by a team in form. The indiscipline in the second half was a let down to the team, and the boys know that if we pace ourselves well next week and keep our focus, we've got a real opportunity to get some points off 4th bottom Sandringham. With our next two games against the opposition directly above us, now's the time for the men to be separated from the boys. Bring on Sandringham!
1-4 the final score
