In a number of ways 2008 was going to be a big test for Old Scotch Soccer Club. Though we have enjoyed three years of success with a rapid rise from third to first division, there was always a question over whether the qualities that had got us there would sustain us in the highest competition that the club has ever competed in. Now, at the conclusion of the 2008 season, we can reflect on another successful year and know that we do indeed have the capability to compete, certainly in Provi 1 and possibly higher if we set our sights on doing so.
This was also another year of expansion with the addition of a Fourths team and a number of new events throughout the year such as the old boys cup (which our Seniors won!). Our membership grew to the extent that we had to split training which posed additional challenges, however there were very few complaints as we just got on with the job. I was particularly pleased with how well the Seniors faired despite some early injuries and absences along the way. We showed true fighting qualities against some of the toughest (and well paid) opposition we have ever faced. Eamonn always sets expectations high and we responded as Old Scotch always has coming desperately close to a top 4 finish. Pip and the Ressies had another really solid year and full credit to them. The Thirds had a great year progressing in on field performance and although the Fourths struggled to get points it was great to see new players getting a start and I know the future will bring success they deserve.

It was a season of mixed fortunes for the Senior team at Old Scotch in 2008. There were some inspirational team and individual performances, often in the face of adversity, against some of the stronger sides in the competition. Unfortunately, these highs were infiltrated with some poor, inconsistent games against some teams that we should have beaten.
Eamonn Beamish - Seniors Coach
The main objective of the Fourths team from the start of the season was to ensure that we at least fielded the full 11 players every game. With just under 70 players on the books, I would have thought this would be easy. Unfortunately, I was terribly mistaken
Shayne "Chops" Francis - Fourths Coach
After the success of season 2007, I felt the Reserves were well placed to continue their winning way in season 2008. With a wealth of new (or returning) talent and depth across the paddock I suppose I expected the results to fall into place
Philip Grant - Reserve Coach
The early goal of the Thirds season was to finsih better than the previous season's Thirds, who had amassed 3 wins and 2 draws in 2007. Early on in the pre-season though, it became apparent that there was a lot of quality in the team, and that this would not be a problem. At some times field a line up that looked like the 2007 Ressies team, selection headaches abounded on a weekly basis, on who to drop down to Fourths.
Shayne Francis - Thirds Coach
